id'ing fall mushrooms
    #5224893 -

Hi everyone, I have been gone for a while and the format for the message board changed on me.

The last week or more I have been going back through my fall pictures and doing ids. Two things. I remember cursing the weather because it would not rain, and I actually should be happy because I found a shitload of mushrooms. And two, I think I learned a thing or two since last fall, because things are going pretty good. When I am done id'ing as far as I can on my own, I am going to post a list of the mushrooms that I found. (You don't mind if I use latin, eh?)

I have a pretty powerful system going here. I have three guides, including one with drawings, which somehow seem to have a lot of different mushrooms. Same genus, but different mushrooms. Then I open three windows on IE, one Japanese yahoo, one Yahoo, and MushroomExpert. If I think I have a hit in one of the guides, I do an image search. If I my preliminary guess is right, then I can usually find a photo on the web that corresponds to the stage of growth in the photo. And, I use Picasa for my photos, which makes it easy to scroll through them, and changing the name of the image is a simple matter of pushing F2. If you have a shitload of mushroom photos like me, where you are sure you have found the same mushroom before, or you are sure you have found the mushroom featured on the page in the guide you happen to be looking at, you can scroll back.

However, this particular mushroom seems to be defying me. The cap is slightly less than 5cm in diameter, and it has a wrinkly cap. Its distinguishing feature, though, is its PROMINENT ring with brown spores covering it. I have looked and looked, but I can not seem to come up with anything that even resembles that ring. I have found it twice, so the ring is not a freak of nature. It was growing in a coniferous forest. The stalk is stringy, as you can see in the cross-section. The spores could be safely said to be brown. It was maybe seven cm tall. I am looking at photos that I took on August 6, so that is all the info I can come up with.

Here it is, and hope you can at least provide me with a genus.

Thanks.

Attached gills rules out Amanita and Agaricus.

Perhaps Psathyrella?

General appearance and texture of the stem seem congruent with psathyrella indeed.

Psathyrella longistriata maybe?

Given the apparent spore print color from the ring in your photos I'd probably start with Agrocybe, Pholiota, or Rozites. Other possibilities are Psathyrella and Stropharia.

Good luck, and let us know if you figure that one out.

Happy mushrooming!
