A war game, what would you do?
    #5225354 -

For my philosophy class, the instructor gave us a hypothetical situation. I'll lay it out below, and my question is, what would you do?

Alright, so you are a senator (or the equivalent) for the island of Thanatos, right near the Greek empire (called the Delian League). There are a couple of other players. First, there are the Athenians. They have the best navy around, and it's essentially unbeatable. They have huge numbers of ships (triremes). Then there are the Spartans. They have an essentially unbeatable land army.

Sparta and Athens are enemies. A little farther north there's the Persians. Ok that's the background.

Thanatos is a small island with 200 ships and 2000 hoplites (those cool round shields), which means 2000 men. It also has a great silver mine. Athens has decided it wants the mine and it wants to make the island one of its colonies, since strategically it's at an important location. They asked us (the senators of Thanatos) to give them what they wanted, but we said no, because we enjoy our freedom and democracy.

Athens in turn launched a small navy to Thanatos, to get what they want. We have a few options. We could stay and fight, but would probably lose, give them what they want, or get help elsewhere.

We talked to the Persians, and they will help us if we agree to give them total control of our mine, give them some of our men to be slaves, and let them install a Persian government. We clearly don't want this, as it's worse than what the Athenians want.

We talked to the Spartans, and initially they said they'd help us on a few conditions, but later changed their minds. Now they're sending an army to Thanatos to help us defend ourselves, no strings attached. We don't trust the Spartans, and we certainly don't want them to take us over either.

We've evacuated most of the island, and the Athenian navy has surrounded the island. If you were Thanatos, what the hell would you do!?

Hmm...let the Spatans comes and fight the Athenians and then the Persians, if they decide to come. Then let the 2,000 Hoplites mop up the survivors.
I dunno if that would be the right answer. :justdontknow:
You should let us know what your professor says later.

I would become an Athenian colony. As long as they granted citizenship to your entire population, I believe it would be a fair deal.

First off, I would send a message to the Persians telling them I needed their help and the same to the Spartans, then I would hide my 2000 men inside of the mine in partially closed off areas. I would also dismantle the majority of the ships and hide the parts to make it appear that the army was gone. Let the 3 nations that land on the island tear each other apart, and then as ToiletDunk said I woulld probably send out my army to clean up the survivors.

Then we'd probably get wiped out at the next offensive so realistically I would probably just accept Athen's terms on condition that they defend us from the Spartans and Persians when they came (if they would go at all).

well the Spartans that are coming to help are gonna get obliterated by the Athenian navy, so they will be of no help, but will distract the Athenians so you may have a shot at attacking them...but you've evacuated most of the island so I assume you just have military there.

you could focus your navy on making a breach in the Athenian circle , letting the Spartans in and just wait for them to land

I think the Spartans are coming by foot, so it will take them a little while to get to Thanatos.

Letting the three powers battle it out isn't a bad idea, I think I may propose it tomorrow.

If they battle it out, though, they will want your silver mine even more to be able to finance their war efforts against each other.

Hm that is a good point. Perhaps then it would be better to have them go at it individually, have the Persians come help us expel the Athenians, then have the Spartans help us expel the Persians, and offer the Spartans a tribute in return. The only problem is that Sparta might get greedy and want more than just a tribute.

Also, I forget what it was, but there were a few other things the Athenians wanted; enough to make their offer thoroughly unwanted. I think they basically want to take over the island.

No matter what, since these are Greeks we're talking about, you better prepare for a lot of buttsecks buddy!

sounds like the spartans seek to invade. Once your island is overrun with spartans in the guise of friends you have lost. An island surrounded by the world's greates navy cant be comfortable.

It seems you must out of necessity let the spartans help you, clearly the love loss between the athenians and the spartans will ensure that the spartan's attentions will be focused. If a problem were going to arsie from them it would likely come after the battle with the athenians. You must develope and then utilize a nice espionage corp. Clearly you are going to need help, you are a small nation. Some well placed bribes and "gifts" should help.

Since by and large you will be hosting the spartan army you will ahve control of the food stores and stuff of this nature. Have lots of poison handy and things of this nature against the need to secure yourself from the greedy spartan homo army.

Roll the dice.

With what modest knowledge I have of ancient history, I think you would be best off of just striking a deal with Athens and letting them protect you. Out of the three parties listed who want the mine, they are the most benevolent rulers. Not only that, but since Thanatos is an island, Athens would have the best odds of protecting you with their unstoppable navy.

Yeah you're absolutely right. I meant that they weren't coming towards the island by the sea, but yes, I do suppose they would have to cross water to get to an island, wouldn't they
