honda broke down
    #5207414 -

maybe ya'al can help, 88 accord lxi hatchback

here's what happened. We got it about 2 months ago, and i've been cruisin, and every once in awhile, for only a split second at a time, the charge (or battery, whichever that light is) light would flash on, but not fully, it would come on real dim for a few times in a row, then stop, it was never on for more than a second at a time, but maybe 4-10 flashes within a 2-5 second period.

so that would happen from time to time, which was kinda wierd, so then one day, i was driving it, and had to make a few stops (with atleast a half hour between the stops--freeway) and i noticed that it was slowly loosing a charge, the engine just wasnt cranking over at the speed it was suppost to, and on the 3rd or 4th stop, it was like the battery was dead (actualy, on this trip, the radio started acting funny, like power wise, but only toward the end)... it would almost crank for half a second, but not really... so we push started it, hoping i wouldnt stall on the way home, and i did when trying to take a left, (which was pretty funny cause 2 chicks just jumped out of the car and push started it up hill real quick and we still made the light)

anyways, we got home, and i tested the battery with a voltage tester, it was at 11.5 or so, but still didnt have enough power to crank over... so i was gonna go take the battery to get tested, but my cousin has a spare honda (totaled on x-mas by a drunk driver) and i swapped batteries, and it had the same voltage on the battery, and it cranked almost for a little then gave out... so i said fuck this, and went about my buisness...

so it's been sitting for a little over a month now, and i finaly got the time to check it out, so i tried to crank it over, and it was completely dead, the charge on the battery was like, 0.3 or so.

i swapped the battery to check it, and it did the half crank, then died... so i said fuck it and disconnected the battery.

now my question is, does this sound like a short in the alternator? cause that's what i want to get tested, but it looks like a bitch to just pull off real quick.

the only thing i changed on the car since i got it was i disconnected the rear speakers (put those in the front cause the one's in the doors were shot), and then hooked up my 6x9's with a patch cable (real ghetto style, but functional)... but i've taken those out and put them back in my car...
i've also replaced some of the dead bulbs in the front of the car...

Does it jump start?

Check the fan belt on the alternator makes sure its not lose.

Could be a blown alternator.

My guess is its either the starter or the alternator. In fact it may be both. I say this because if you bought a new battery after your old one lost its charge and it wont even turn over, then perhaps a busted alternator caused your old battery to drain and a busted starter will not allow it to start. Or, your battery was just old and it was time for a replacement, and your starter broke at the same time. Either way i would bring it down to an auto shop and test it out. Dont pay for a starter/alternator diag, its a rip (i should know, im a mechanic =P), just pull them both out yourself and use the machines most auto shops have to test them for free. A new starter for an accord should run you about $110, and an alternator you could probably find for as low as $70 (if you get a cheapie like a bosch or a prostart, which should work just fine)

EDIT: After rereading your post and realizing that you didnt buy a new battery, you just swapped for another possibly-dead one, it is most likely the alternator.

belts look good, as for pulling the alt or starter, i've really been heasatant on doing a lot of that work, i'm parked on the street and it's whack trying to do car work when a bus goes by (every 10 minutes)

but yea, i was gonna pull the alternator today, and i almost had it out, it was really too easy, it just seemed really small... but then i realized that i just unbolted the A/C  and it was getting dark...

the battery i put in came from another car, i recon it would be best to test teh alt first, cause it seems more likely a canidate, but again, pulling it out with limited tools is a bitch

voltage reg on the altenator. or bad cables. if its not the altenator, cut the cables and see if they are smoked.

you need an alternator thats easy to put in
like 50 bucks
u need battery and jumper cables
50 bucks for battery
10 cables
charge the battery for like 20 minutes then put it in the car w/ the new alternator, and start it up

the lights actin funny are because they arent getting anough voltage from the electrical power system

i'm gonna have to buy the book tomorrow, cause it would be sweet to have, but i recon i'll pull the alt out and go to autozone and get it tested...

Could also be the starter solenoid

i was thinking that, but when i do crank it, it does crank a little tiny bit, it acts as if the battery is too low to start the car, so it stops working... all i know, is if i pull one, i sure as hell dont want to pull the other one later... they look like a bitch to get to... i wish it was my car that was fucked up, it's easy as hell to get to the starter, right there on the top (i replaced it like 2 months ago after a few month span of roll startin it)

yeah try this. there should be a slide rod that your alternator connects to undo the nut that is holding the altenator secure and with a crow bar pull it as hard as you can to increase tension on the belt then retighten nut while still applying leverage. i had an old camaro that was doing the same thing and this fixed it. worth a shot.
