Monotub Size and Number of Holes?

im planning on spawning in my poop in the morning, but im having doubts about the size of the tubs i bought, 30 gallon. 4in of substrate with 1/2in casing.
are these tubs too big? will the extra space dry out my casing/substrate?

this is my first run at a monotub, so im curious about what size tub is the most efficient. i searched but never found a direct answer.

well, the original monotub is like 1/3 of what you have there and i can imagine
that b/c of the big surface area, co2 buildup CAN become an issue.

i am however not sure about it but personally would not go with such a big tub.
the "original" monotub, as u can see from my link in the sig, was approx 10 gallon.

so what is the largest size monotub that anyone has successfully used?

the way i see it, the extra space isnt too different than that created using a double tub. but i will go smaller if 30gal is too big.

33 gallon mono tub.

First flush.

Wet yield of 6 lbs for first flush.


As I stated in my PM to you, I recommend 6-8 inches of space between your top and bottom holes. The top holes should be at the top of the container. You should target a tub that has a total depth of 12-14 inches to prevent air stagnation. So that's 5 inches for your substrate and casing layer, 1 inch for the hole, and 6-8 inches of space to the top holes.

You do not need a small tub to get results people. Maintain the recommended space between top and bottom holes and you'll be fine.

i noticed that you still only use 8 total holes on that 33gal. tub. i put an extra 8 holes (16 total) in mine, should i cover them up and just stick with 8?

I personally have never used more than 8 holes total. I think you may have difficulty maintaining humidity with that many holes. Fresh air exchange is certainly important, but so is humidity. If you can afford it, let it run and see how it does. If you can't, cover up those other holes and let it run with just 8.

Hell, I use no less than 12, and never have humidity probs.Here is a pic of my first ever chamber, and damn does it produce for its size.

Considering that you are using Perlite, I can see why you don't run into problems.  :rolleyes: When I speak about Mono and Double Tubs, I am always referring to bulk grows. I don't play around with cakes, nor do I use Perlite. For those of you fruiting bulk substrates, my recommendation stands.

That was a pick of my first grow ever, and I dont cake it anymore. I just harvested 2 dry ounces a couple weeks ago from it of z strain.When using good amounts of polyfil, with no external/electronic sources of FAE, loss of humidity is not a prob for me.There IS a slight loss of condensation, but no lack of humidification.

Wronguy, how many 1/2 pint PF cakes did u crumble up into that single tub system in your bathtub? What is the minimum and maximum number of PF cakes you could use in that 33 gal tub.

..And how are you keeping that 33 gal tub in you bathtub at 70-75degrees for fruiting? Is you whole bathroom at jungle temperature?

I am currently getting ready to do my second mono tub with a 66 qt or 16.5 gallon tub. I am using 10 lbs of tennstud and the sub depth is going to be about 5" and I will have a little bit of poo left over for a small casing(at least to my calculations). I am going case it with 1/2" of coir/verm and it should work great. I have 4 3/4" holes stuffed with polyfill. On my last grow I used 1" holes and it let too much humidity out. So now this one should be great. Goodluck with your monotub.

That grow was done with 7 quart jars of WBS, Puerto Rican strain, to about 15 pounds of wet manure. My first grow was done with crumbled cakes, but in smaller double tubs. I've never looked back since I started doing bulk.

Based on my usage of quart jars for this grow, you would need 28 1/2 pint jars of BRF to equal the same amount.

My fruiting temps are whatever the house is at that time. Sometimes it's at 65 and sometimes it's at 75. My mushrooms have always grown wonderfully with these fluctuations. The only exception is my closet, which has a heater. My closet is maintained at 76 degrees and is used as my incubation chamber.

OMG, I mixed only two 1/2 pint jars of WBS crumbled into hpoo in my double tub FC which is a little bigger than your 33gal one, and I thought using two was lots!! Thanks for giving me that to consider.

I am mixing 12 half pints for 10 lbs and that should be plenty. You only need a 1:10 ratio but the more the better. The faster your shit colonizes the less chance there is of a contamination.

Two half pints of spawn is pretty low. You can expect slow colonization times. If you were able to keep sterile conditions you should have success. If you have any contaminates, you may have a problem as they may spread quicker than the mycelium can.

Always check out the recommended ratios before spawning. Good luck either way. I think we've hijacked this thread enough. Sorry about that Omnicracker.

no worries, im actually glad to see this come back to life, ive got another question.

i put my tubs in black garbage bags after spawing to block out light, per the instructions i read. (i ended up spawing two 18 gal. and one 30 gal.)

should the bag not be closed off?

i know you need AE for Hpoo incubation, so it seems that the trashbags should be open.

Are you saying 1 inch from the casing to cut your botom holes or 1 inch holes directly above the casing?
