Classifications and Groups

Should you look at things from a whole, or discern the contents into individual parts? To see what parts to accept, and which to reject? Is it important to step back at and look at a situation as a whole macrosystem, or going in the system itself, deciding what to take and what to leave? Does accepting groupings as one ever serve a purpose?

I often hear people say, "After taking psychedelics, how can you think that?", or "How can you listen to punk and not drink?". It's like these culture cliques come in little tiny packages, and you cant throw parts out or construct anything new.

To appoint another anecdote to convey my case in point, my brother gave me these "chinese chi meditation spheres" for Christmas. It came with a little manual of their use that talked about several things on the spheres themselves, meditation and the like. Then it started talking about the five elements. I thought it'd be, as I formulate my beliefs, Fire; Water; Fire; Earth and Life Energy, but instead it was Fire, Water, Wood, Earth, and Metal.

I couldnt get over how they could classify Wood itself as an element. Then why isnt plastic an element? Or smoke? You dont need fire to make smoke. Or why isnt helium or hydrogen up there?

There's always more to the package. Even the table of elements leaves room for improvement and addition.

By accepting the whole, you're only isolating yourself in a fortress of usage of information you already possess. And feeding off your own knowledge will eventually lead to starvation.

From my own perspective I'll say that reminds me of the macro of the Tao and distancing oneself versus perhaps forgetting about the big picture and immersing oneself. Certainly all of us reading this are immersing ourselves to some degree so I'd guess that immersion contains a higher entertainment value. At the same time distancing oneself can have a calming, grounding and centering effect when immersion becomes too chaotic for one's level of (understanding?)

Good point. Yes I agree that immersion is probably inevitable no matter how advanced an entity becomes.

How about parts of a whole.  See the part and see it in relation to the whole.

When I play poker I have to look at my cards as part of the deck.  What the probabilities are of my hand being completed or just winning by other cards in the deck.  With that said I don't want to advocate the judgement of certain parts, but the awareness of them in relation to the whole.

Are you saying that the counter-culture is in fact itself a culture and that a true "counter-culturist"(Word?) would not prescribe himself cultural boundaries but in fact create his own? :smirk:
