could not find vermaculite
    #517254 - 01/11/02 09:31 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I went to a few stores and tried finding verm. I did not find any. Can perlite be used as a substitute?

Try Lowes or Home Depot , garden section

Perlite is used for humidity

Some of those vendors on that list I gave you in the other thread carry Vermiculite if you can't find it near you.

Peace

I went to Home Depot today to try to find some vermiculite, and was told by the nice man in the flower section that vermiculite is illegal and they didn't sell any anymore. So, I came back here, looked around, then did some searching around the web for more info. Looks like vermiculite got a bad name as a substance which contains asbestos. I still need to find some of the stuff, and it doesn't seem as though it's been outlawed, but I wonder if anybody else has had any problems getting a hold of the stuff recently. As I said, they didn't have any in the Home Depot near me (Charlestown, MA). I'm going to look at some smaller stores to see if they have any, but I was curious as to the experiences of other people on this forum.

thanks.

I bought some at Lowes the other day. I figured Home Depot would have it too.

It's NOT illeagle.

Any store clerk that says that shit is probably "on to you" and is simply fucking with ya.

It has some health issues- if you snort it! - But it's not against the law. I dont think that it will be either.

damn i don't get it. how can people have such a hard time finding this stuff? It's everywhere. I went to OSH they had everything. I went to The Do It Center they had everything. I went to Home Depot they had everything. by everything I'm refering to vermiculite, perlite, lime, sphagnum peat moss, and they all had different potting soils that would be excellent to case with. The only thing I had trouble finding was BRF. I tried so many markets but eventually found it at whole foods. My friend got a job there so I can get it whenever I need it and I get a fat discount.

you're telling me. it would seem like everything is easy to find, but sometimes it's not. i also couldn't find the canning jars i wanted (found whole pint, and lot's of canning jars with shoulders, and also the ones with the levers on them). last time, i ended up buying everything online, because it was the only sure bet. i'll look around some more though, and will hopefully find everything i need.

I guess I lucked out. They had the canning jars at OSH $7.19 a dozen. I also saw the same ones at ralphs for 9 bucks a dozen.

I went to a nursery which told me too that Verm had asbestos in it as well...Then went to a place just down the road and they said that was a lie and had verm, coco, perlite, casing trays, lime, and oyster... I think it depends on the store, just keep looking and you'll find it for sure.

As for the canning jars, I couldn't find those around here, so I just ordered them online...It was a little more expensive but they are here and look great! :)

you might want to check some supermarkets in your area. i know of two supermarkets that carry small bags of vermiculite. if your supermarket has a gardening section (usually in the produce section) check there.

vermiculite does have asbestos in it, and if you can use other substrate and casing mixtures you might as well. verm is mined and certain mines have a much higher percentage of asbestos. Many of the people that work in these mines have died/are dying from mesothelioma which is a lung cancer linked with asbestos. You probably don't have to worry about it just using it once in a while, but your lungs will thank you if you use better methods. If you can get a protective mask to use during handling that's not a bad idea either. Again the risk when dealing with it for these purposes is probably about as high as getting cancer from 2nd hand smoke.
If you smoke cigarettes, dope, crack, and hang out in bars regularly then why fuck around and add another carcinogen?

Too funny.....2nd hand smoke kills people.
Killed my Mom.
Anyway.....back to Verm.
Only a few mines were found to have asbestos in them.
Not all verm has asbestos.
As far as finding it.....i had a hell of a time at first finding it.
I went on a mission.....I checked local nurseries, Hardware stores, you name it....started finding it.
Fred Meyers has alot of Verm.....in fact they seemed to have the most.
You can always find it online if you don't have it locally.
Good hunting.
