Peruvian BTW probably a Peruvian // Pedro cross. But thats just what i think i am fa from an expert on the subject. Just an observation.

Hmm, I'm skeptical about that one even being a trichocereus. Of course at this age, caution must always be used in ID'ing a cactus, especially from a photo. But to me it looks closer to Browningia hertlingiana than any kind of tricho. Could be wrong though! Its just those horizontal notches between the areoles, and the spine colouration / arrangement that makes me think this. Whereas tricho has their notches in a V shape just above the areole.

Edit: Here's mine for comparison. A slightly more mature specimen that has developed their characteristic glaucous colouration. But can you see the similarities I'm talking about?

from a distance it looks like a trichocereus peruvianus kk242. notice this is NOT a kk242 nor is it a cross of pedro and kk242. peruvianus have V notches directly above the areoles. pedros dip in above the areoles, kinda getting the V effect but not realy. a cross of the 2 would blend the 2 difrences together. heres a link to a pic of a kk242, notice the V marking above the areoles.

mmm so far the browningia is the closest match, however its ribs are much more pronounced then on mine...
the thing is im pretty sure its an active cactus, cuz its sold as an active cactus and people who buy them are sometimes open and upfront about their intentions with it.
i cant imagine they would come back if it the dude sold bogus cacti...

anyways i intend to use this as a rootstock for grafting, so are browningia suitable for that?

Yeah I'm 100% sure its not a trich now after thinking about it, most likely browningia. Although I've never tried them, I don't think they are active. Although they have been reported to contain mescaline so who knows. Its not just a question of how much mescaline is in them but also of what other potentially neurotoxic alkaloids may be present.

From what I have seen around the web, this is probably the 2nd most common cactus to be misidentified as a 'Peruvian Torch'...the most common being Cereus peruvianus. And of course the myrtillocactus geometrizanis is commonly mis-ID'd as San Pedro and sold as such.

I wouldn't be surprised if the people you bought it off simply weren't skilled enough at cacti ID'ing to recognise it as a non-trichocereus. I was given a browningia hertlingiana by a friend of mine who knows tricho's pretty well and he thought it was a trich.

But yes I reckon they would be good for use as graft stock, probably similar to trichocereus in that respect, although they are a little slower growing than San Pedro.

still this is prolly not browningia, the ribs are not pronounced enuff and the thorns too short.
maybe a hybrid of it and something else?

Cacti can vary greatly in their appearance depending on the conditions in which they are grown. But no I'm not sure that it is browningia it could be something else.

u can see from the pics that theres not alot of light in there.
also its clear that these people know why people like san pedro
so im pretty sure that its does 'something' ...
