best linux dist for a dinosaur puter
    #5022334 - 12/06/05 10:19 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

ok, in a few posts back, i explained i needed to replace my OS due to a shattered disk. sorta,
anyway..
i was told my puter ( p3 500 128mb ram) was too outdated for winxp

so i have thought it out, its gonna be 3+ months before i can get a new system, so maybe i could partition my harddrive, and install a linux dist.. just in case my win98se takes a poop on me, as it usually does.

so, basicly what im asking is what would the best FREE dist of linux should i use with this ol' puter?

install ubuntu lite or damn small linux

there are many other lite distros out there - those are two that I've played around with successfully. I recommend ubuntulite over DSL, but they are both good.

should be enough to run any kind of linux, basically (maybe multimedia applications will bog down a bit, though)

Gentoo can run very well with liggtle ram, but it is hard as hell to set up.

Hey man,

First off, sounds like we have very similar computers. I have a P4 at 1.2g and 128mb ram...

I ran XP for close to 4 years with no problem (keep in mind, when xp was released, your specs were the norm). So that should be fine.

And I've recently been running ubuntu and kubuntu. Both work fine. Ubuntu seemed to run a bit faster.

yeah, no doubt

i run vector linux and gentoo linux on two different P90/40MB RAM desktop and thinkpad respectively.

the gentoo system was compiled from stage1 as lightly and optimised as possible and runs rather well for such an old system.
the vector system doesn't get used much but runs just fine.

obviously i'm not video editing or anything but basics like email, browsing, mp3s, p2p and occasional gimp and openoffice are just fine.

Ubuntu works great. For a really old system take Puppy for a walk.
