I want a linux box, what do I need?
    #5747862 - 06/13/06 11:17 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I've just aquired an old computer from my g/f's parents and want to turn in into a linux box. Is Ubuntu the the flavor of choice?

I think my computer is an old Celeron with 128 or 256 on the ram and 20 gig hard drive. I just got the video working on it tonight and as soon as I did my girl finished dinner so that's why I'm not 100% on the specs. From what I've seen though that should be plenty for linux though, right?

i use ubuntu and i like it quite a bit. others do too. i think it's a good choice.

that machine will probably be fine. if you find it a little too slow, you can install and use the xfce desktop environment, which is lighter and faster, and be running xubuntu.

If its 128 use something lighter, kind of slackware or archlinux.

yeah, 128mb is way to little for ubuntu.
however, as wilshire pointed out, running xubuntu
will work - will not be lightening fast, but good enough.
http://www.xubuntu.org

how fast is that processor?

Eek!

I didn't realize it was so old.  It's a Celeron 300 MHz with 256 mb on the ram.  Will it even run at all?  I mainly just want to experience linux.

I'm in the process of acquiring components to build my trading computer as well.  I don't want to mess with dual boot as it will be paramount that this machine not fail and I don't want to unnecessarily complicate things.  I don't even plan on browsing with this computer.  If I wanted to use the components on the better machine though, how hard is it setup multiple boot drives with a selector switch?  Since this would only be used after trading hours, would even having it setup this way put me at too much risk?

you could always try an ultra-light distro like:

http://www.vectorlinux.com
http://www.puppylinux.org
http://featherlinux.berlios.de
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org

gentoo and arch linux and slackware if you know what you're doing (or want a challenge/learn something)

also, see this page: http://www.linuxlinks.com/Distributions/Mini_Distributions

yeah, these will run great on your machine.

I really do recommend vector linux. the standard is pretty good:
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/vectorlinux/docs/vl50/vl-standard.html

it is based on slackware
check it out

I'm finally planning on installing one or more of these tonight or tommorow. Question though, and forgive my ignorance, but why are different versions of Linux refered to as distro's - which I assume is short for distribution?

One other quick question I had that I thought you might be able to answer. I have another old computer that I drug out when I was fucking with the one I just got. It's an old Pentium II running Win 95 and hasn't been touched in years. It has a bunch of pictures on it that I want, but has no burner. It has a USB port but when I plug my stick drive in it, it doesn't recognize the drive. Any suggestions on how to get it to?

Yeah, I thought of hooking it up to the internet (though I was probably just gonna email myself through my gmail acct) but as a last resort though because the only ethernet card I have is my computer and it would require me taking it apart. Not usually a big deal but at the insistance of my girlfriend I spent nearly 3 hours a few months back organizing the wires behind it so they are neatly hidden (the computer is on an all glass desk in our study and the first thing you see when you walk through the front door).

win95 does not have plug-n-play drivers, that is why it is not recognized. You can d/l the driver from the manufacturers website im sure, but they prolly dont have one for win95..

peace
