Dowels
    #664614 -

This is a great source; It was less than $17 for a thousand, a couple bucks shipping.

These are part no. "PIN 0375"

I wish I had gotten these a little sooner though

They are used for inoculation of logs with diffrent mushrooms species(Oyster species, shiitake, nameko...)
The dowels are soaked, sterilized, and inoculated with grain spawn.
Once they are colonized, holes are drilled in logs, the dowels hammered in and the hole sealed with wax.
After 19-18 months mushrooms appear.

Does anybody know how long does it take for dowels to be fully colonized. I have inoculated some dowels with Reishi and Fomitopsis pinnicola about one month ago and the mycellium has overgrown the surface. Does it have to penetrate also inside dowels before they can be used?

If mycelium spreads all across the surface, this should be enough.

Re: Dowels Shitake [Re: shaggymane]

Help, I need advice! We bought shitake plugs and they arrived two weeks before the logs. Ignorantly we placed them in the back of the closet where it was dark, but also warmer than what it should have been. When we opened them to start hammering them into the logs, lo and behold a couple of mushrooms had started to grow out of the plugs. We went ahead and used about half of them. Now we're wondering if the 'spring has already sprung' so to speak. In other words, did all of the spores come out of the dowels and now they're no good??? Most of them look like the pictures I've seen, all clumpy and white. Please advise......THANKS!

they will be fine. store them in a refridgerator. they will be good for many months that way. they are covered with mycillium, not spores.
