When the Levee Breaks...
    #5005668 -

Was the flooding of New Orleans from broken levees a result of Bush administration cutbacks to Louisianna's federal funding? Such charges have been made practically from the beginning of the Hurricane Katrina media myth.

Despite the media's self-congratulatory back slapping over their coverage of Hurricane Katrina, just about everything they reported in the first few weeks of Katrina's striking New Orleans has since been proven wrong. This latest revelation cannot be pinned on the media, but it's another example of the media's willingness to print anything which might in some way make Bush look bad.

Turns out the levees in question were built incorrectly from the beginning -- long before Bush had any control over federal funding to Louisianna --

It is a conspiracy... of incompetence.

It's alot of people's fault. Bush is just one of the most recent idiots to contribute to the disaster.

It's interesting that her math skills apparently didn't help her determine who was, in fact, president at the time: George Bush Senior

Like father like son I guess.

Still, the bulk of the blame should rest on the state, and the people of Louisiana who choose to be stupid and poor.

It doesn't matter who was president when the levees were built. They were built by the Army Corps of Engineers and instead of going 60 feet underground as required considering the weak soil, they only went 10 feet under. End the blame game.

My favorite part is when they started talking about cannibalism at the convention center. That was just a whole new level of absurdity.

This blog entry was featured on worldnetdaily.com and touched off a series of articles discussing possible cannibalism in new orleans. Of course most journalists were a bit more cautious in jumping to conclusions but it was out there and going around for a few days.

It was my idea to flood New Orleans. When they drain the area, my real estate investments should sky rocket. I told you all I was an Illuminati inter-dimensional being. Join the Republicans and/or other right wing organization and you can share in the wealth of those who rule the universe.

cannibalism...like 20,000 dead...bands of rapists beheading children...

the whole thing is a fucking farce.

what's even worse is that people are still basically getting fucked
by FEMA and their insurance agencies...but, shit, Bourbon Street's

Ugh, Michelle Malkin. I've read enough of her drivel to not trust anything she says. I remember writing a letter to my local newspaper concerning how she claimed the abuses at Guantanamo Bay were exaggerated, when, coincidentally, the Pentagon admitted the abuses the same day her article was printed. I have no respect for her integrity, and I consider her a hack.

That being said, I'd wait until the report is published before coming to any conclusions. It should go without saying that journalists tend to exegerate information just to back an agenda. Not that I'm necessarly saying this is untrue, but it should be evaluated by the original source, not the people pointing to the source.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Too bad you didn't bother to read the article at the link I provided. If you had you would have found very little of it was Malkin's thoughts. Instead she quotes the New Orleans Times-Picayune and provides a link to the Washington Post detailing suspicions of faulty design and construction years ago.

If you have a beef with the facts reported, take it up with the Wapo and the Times-Picayune, not with Malkin, whose only substantive contribution to the revelations was to provide links.

Yeah, I read the link. My point is that she has a history of pointing at poor sources. I just don't trust her to even provide links, at least not without verifying the origins of the source (http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Michelle_Malkin, among others). Like I said, I'm not saying that these claims aren't true, but without being able to look at the report, I thought it was hard to just go by one journalist's write-up about it.

I did a couple searches and, at first, could only find that one journalist's article. Then I found one from the NY Times. It contained a lot of the same info, but also had more opinions from different members of the team investigating. It seems as if not all of them are agreeing 100%.

Here's an exerpt:
Quote:
"Another corps spokesman, Wayne Stroupe, said it was still too early to know exactly why the levees of New Orleans failed. The corps, Mr. Stroupe said, is conducting its own investigation, with a report expected at the beginning of June. He said the report would include detailed analyses of the forces that the storm actually brought to bear on the city's flood control systems....

"We don't want to release any of this until we have all of our background data completely documented," he said. But he also said that the final determinations, which will be released early next year, were likely to be similar to those in the draft."

"Another member of Team Louisiana, G. Paul Kemp, an associate professor at L.S.U. and director of the Natural Systems Modeling Group at the university's Center for Coastal, Energy and Environmental Resources, said outsiders might interpret the findings as an effort to foist blame for Louisiana's problems onto the federal government and avoid responsibility for local lapses in levee maintenance.

But, Dr. Kemp argued, "the design and construction is a process that is overseen by federal people at every step." He added that the ultimate goal was to find out precisely what went wrong, for the sake of future guidance. "

So this is exactly my point. Michelle Malkin reads stuff like this, and editorializes her own agenda simply because she found something which backed her ideology. She has a huge history of just reacting to things, so I do take beef with her just jumping on this article.

Again, I'm not taking any position on the information, I just think it's rather inconclusive at this point without having more information, and especially without having the actual document to review.

Malkin was not the first to link to reports of faulty design and execution --such reports have been coming out for months.

As for the reliability of the sources she quotes -- the Times-Picayune and the Washington Post -- it must be noted that the coverage of the Times-Picayune of the Katrina saga was light years ahead of the rest of the media. Not surprising seeing how it's the hometown paper and therefore expected to be more on top of things.

Link please. The bits you quote don't indicate any disagreement at all. It just quotes one guy being cautious about it -- he claims it's "too early" to say. Of course, he's a spokesman for the same people accused of botching the job so it is unsurprising he's not enthusiastic about accepting blame. Even then, here's the money quote from that same guy --"But he also said that the final determinations, which will be released early next year, were likely to be similar to those in the draft."

The second guy's comments don't dispute the report in the slightest, they just talk about who is more to blame for the levees being botched -- the Feds or the State.

My point (again) is that if you want to blame someone for supposedly misrepresenting things, don't blame Malkin, blame the Times-Picayune and the WaPo.

By the way, I'm curious why you believe the report is being misrepresented. What motive do you believe the Times-Picayune would have for doing that?

Sorry, misread some of that NY Times article. I thought I provided a link for it last night, but I guess I didn't ( http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/01/national/nationalspecial/01levees.html ). This story seems to be on the up & up.

Thanks for providing the link. Now that we can check the whole article, we can see that what it reports is esentially identical to what is reported by the Times-Picayune stories linked by Malkin.
