Question about trespassing

Yesterday I was out hunting with some buddies in a small field alongside a road where I parked my car. There was no fence and no signs indicating that the land was private and trespassing was prohibited. Anyway, the owner somehow saw us and called the cops. I tried to talk to him but he was an asshole so I just left before the cops presumably showed up. I explained that as far as I knew, one is not trespassing unless there are signs posted, to which he replied "Its fuckers like you that take those signs down!".

So what does actually constitute trespassing? Shit like that sucks to deal with.

You would have to read your local laws. You can't actually be charged for tresspssing unless you've been warned. That was your warning. It's up to the land owner to take care of his signs or the people taking them down.

if you have to hop a fence to get into a field, than it is definately considered trespassing.

Hopping a fence is not necessarily damning depending on where you are and what you are doing. But as stated above you will have to check your local laws concerning this as the regulations vary from state to state? and possibly county to county if the local citizens have pushed the matter of trespass to the fore.
I fully understand the desire to hop fences and I do this with regularity given favorable conditions, however I also own 40 acres and have experienced problems with illegal dumping? sooo when trespassing remember to invoke your powers of invisibility beforehand and keep your karma straight.

exactly.
..if you're getting caught, you're doing it wrong.  A good hunter goes unnoticed.  You have to take all the variables, add them up before hand, and then go hunting.

In other words, it's not that you got caught for no reason, but how you got caught.

Trespassing, or the thought of getting caught, is one of the primary reasons why people decide to cultivate rather than take that risk.
