Judging Casings
    #493795 - 12/17/01 01:26 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

I was just wondering if people would like to go ahead and grade casings on a scale with ease and reliability. Currently I am using potting soil and vermiculite at bottom, smashed cakes middle and then covering with plain potting soil onto. So far little success but I do see just a little mycelium pocking on the top after 2 weeks. Although I have heard that for Treasure Coast a little more time should be added for the process. It's a slow grower; it's all good though. Thanks

hehe great answer...
your casing seems to be doing fine, you really can't tell until you see a pic.
just make sure the casing doesn't get dehydrated and you're all set.

yeah, i'll second that on the dehyrdrating part. I've been misting mine daily and seems to have helped out.

also, i used a 50/50 verm/peatmoss casing mixture and so far it's going wonderfully. I noticed roughly 20 pins approx. two days after casing.

can you mist a casing with plain tap water or is there some type of sterylizing process?

i've heard some people recommend using distilled water.. i used distilled for one squirt bottle full, but ran out so I'm just using tap water now. Seems to be ok so far. If you're worreid about contams, just add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to the mist bottle.

Someone was telling me to use tap water because it has some nutrients or minerals or something down those lines that distilled water doesn't. Helps with the mycelium... I couldn't be wrong so don't hold that against me. Also I am wondering about Cob Web infection... Although I don't think I have it, what does it look like for the fact Mycelium is also white.

One last thing... has anyone used the Soil casing with positive results? Every just talkes about these fancy 50/50 casing. What happend to normal soil like nature made them grow in?

Why is everything moving so slow for me? I started the cakes about 9 weeks ago and it was untill 2 weeks ago I moved the cakes into a casing and it still is growing slowly?

Well here is the thing, I haven?t been able to keep the cakes/casing at a steady temperature. Because I live in California and the weather now is cold, dry and well colder my room temp changes from when the heater is on around (70) to when the heater is off (67) Because of this I finally found a method I could use... I turn on my stereo (one of those surround sounds receivers so it heats up pretty good) and put my casing on top of that for now. So far I have been going back and forth on keeping the casing under my bed and on top of the stereo. I am trying to do this with out my parents seeing all this crap so room is limited if you know what I mean.

Doing that will end up drying your cakes and slow the jars... i found this out the hard way too.... except i think my cakes were a little dry to begin with and this just settled matters. I put 2 large beach towles folded up into the bottem, put in my jars, covered them with tin-foil (later removed, like i always do) then filled with water till it was over 3/4 way up the jar. And put a heating pad on the lowest temp. The water was the perfect temperature for growth... 5deg below perfect to make up for the life created inner jar heat. They were real slow to colonize and the bottem, with my bare hand i felt no heat difference, even with applying more pressure down then the jar could ever do. But once i pulled the jars out and gave them a few days to recover they took over the bottem like clockwork.

Just some stuff to think about.

Hey thanks... I guess you don't always need fancy gadgets to get the job done. Do you have any other heating methods that I can use by finding things just around the house such as heating blankets and well my case heated stereo?
