Any U.S. History geeks out there?

I have to write an essay in response to this question:

Why did the institution of slavery command the loyalty of the vast majority of antebellum whites, despite the fact that only a small percentage of them owned slaves?


I have brainstormed, and came up with the following reasons:
They feared blacks, and their numbers. They wanted to opress them as much as possible.

Out of tradition, it was simply a way of life for blacks to be slaves.

Poor farmers someday hoped to own slaves themselves.


Any other ideas?

Not only that, but many people did not sympathize with blacks b/c they didn't know any of them. It's a lot easier to dehumanize a group of people if you've never met one.

Black people also had procession of the sacred Womba Wututu powder and the white people wanted to make sure they never had a chance to put it to good use.

I'm not sure if that was really a reason. Pat Robertson doesn't own any slaves.

But back to the lecture at hand, I think there were two big things:

1. Poor white people could always feel secure knowing that they were above black slaves. The presence of the slave class made them feel more important, like how bullies have to put others down to feel good about themselves. After the Emancipation Proclamation lots of poor white southerners were really angry because they were by law no better than the freed slaves.

2. The principle of outside interference made the Southerners more belligerant. The idea that somebody from the North was going to tell them how their society should be run probobly made them more steadfast to the slave society. The concept of cultural tradition held things in check and the duality of the 'Other' strengthened and united their identity as Southerners.

Yes, correct and correct! I will definitely incorporate both of those into my essay, they are very solid reasons.



Here it is so far:


In antebellum America, the issue of slavery and blacks' rights was a fiercely debated topic. A vast majority of antebellum whites supported the instituion of slavery, despite the fact that only a small percentage of them owned slaves. This was due to several reasons, such as tradition, the conviction that blacks were inferior and this did not want nor deserve freedom, and poor farmers' hopes to one day own slaves themselves.
One of the reasons that Southern America became as prosperous as it did is due to the large number of slaves that worked on plantations for white landowners. For years, blacks slaved under the command of wealthy plantation owners from sun up until sun down for no pay and minimal allowances of food, clothing, and shelter. Thus, it was not at all shocking for those who grew up around slavery to see whippings, floggings, and the dehumanization of the black race. As time passed, especially in the South, white ownership of slaves became something of a tradition, a way of life. Even though many whites that supported the institution of slavery did not own slaves themselves, they saw nothing wrong with slavery and simply wanted to uphold practices that not only helped America to grow and prosper, both before and after the industrial revolution, but had been in place for years.

Yea, there was a pretty big economical factor to owning slaves. Especially in the south, slave-owning was a way of life. Whites didn't want to have to pay their workers. Even after slavery was abolished, many blacks had no where else to go. Many never even left the farms they were slaves on. Instead of a physical slavery, blacks were forced into an economical slavery... very few blacks had the resources to start their own farms or even support themselves. It should also be noted that the antebellum North was generally less accepting of slavery than the South. This isn't to say that the North didn't have some industries that relied on cheap, black labor...

I'm not sure if this is entirely correct. It wasn't so much the North telling them how their society should be run as it was the south. It state in my history book that there were far more abolitionist movements south of the Mason Dixon line than in the north.

I guess in the North it wasn't as much of an issue, whereas in the south it was a common debate. What do you think?

Oh yeah, I forgot, slavery is illegal.

Learyfan was right. Many slaveholders used Christianity to legitimize their ownership of slaves.

The North didn't rely on slave labor for the vast majority of its economy (i.e. is was mostly industrial and not agricultural). The North pickes up the anti-slavery position basically to piss off the South and further justify their position in the Civil War.
