Grain Only in Double Tubs? (No Poo)

I am wondering about using strictly grain in my double tubs. I inoculated 6 quart jars of WBS and they were 100% colonized in 8 days, which is blazing fast compared to how SLOOOOOOOOWLY the poo colonizes when this spawn is mixed with it. I don't know much about the poo other than the fact that it is a mixture of horse/cow poo with straw that came off of a huge pile. It has some dirt in it too and the guy that feeds the horses and cattle told me that the food they eat has mold on it so that rules out fungicide.

Anyway, my first double tub has taken 22 days so far from spawning and is showing no positive progress whatsoever and I'm starting to see gray spots on the surface. My second tub was spawned with WBS 13 days ago and it it only about 20% colonized.

That leads me to my question about using grain only. Can I just inoculate a double tub full of WBS with my colonized jars of WBS or is this not possible with double tubs? Is there a special way to prepare WBS for use as a bulk substrate or do I just sterilize it too?

i spawn straight grain in my single tub. ive mostly done it with popcorn and i found 4 pts of popcorn to a 6 qt container gave me a good substrate depth of about 2". and cased w/ 50/50+ tec. i just tried using WBS and IMO 8 pts of WBS would be good for a 6 qt container. gust giveing you my ratios, incase it will help ya out some.. and my timeline has been 28-33 days from inoculation (multi spore) to first harvest. heres pic of my best single tub grow so far, its cased popcorn and yeilded just under 2 oz dried..



as far as your poop problems go, im just getting started w/ poo. and so far in about a week my poo has been colonizing, besides my first casing.. i had the temp to high so it took alot longer. and it also depends on your spawn to poo ratio on how long it takes. and IMO mixing up the spawn and the poo realy good helps to, i use my hands to make sure i get a good mixture.

hope this helps out some, sorry if it makes no sence im a lil fried right now.. i can try to clear up any questions in the morning..

The poo was measured out and pasteurized in water at 160-170 degrees for 1 hour. I strained it and let it cool, then mixed 3 quarts of colonized WBS in with 19 quarts of the poo. I know that spawn rate is too low but yesterday I used 6 quarts of colonized WBS and 17 quarts of pasteurized poo. That was only yesterday so I am waiting to see if there is a difference but if not then I'd like to try just straight grain cased with 50/50 or something like that. What I'm thinking about doing is PCing 22 jars of WBS and inoculating 6 of them. Then once the 6 jars are colonized, mix them in the double tubs with the other 16 jars and wait for it to colonize. Then I'll case and wait for the casing to show some signs of growth and then start fruiting. Does this sound good?

If your thinking that, you need to look into useing spawnbags. It much better for big volumes of spawn.

Yes it will work. Use the rez effect tek to increase the water in the sub. The rez effect tek is basically colonized grain and field capacity verm made into a bulk.

you would be better off fruiting off of Rye grain...more nutes for the shrooms..nice and potent to..imo,but i would stick to the poo..its working good for me :tongue2:

I think I'm pasteurizing correctly. I measure out the amount of shit needed, put it in a pillow case, submerge it in a pressure cooker with the lid off of course, let the water soak in, tie it off, stab a meat thermometer into the pillow case, and let it sit at 160-170 degrees for one hour.

After that I take the pillow case out and squeeze the water out of the shit. Then I lay the pillow case on the floor and stand on it to get even more water out. I let this cool, then put it and my spawn in the double tubs. Then I seal it off and wait until I have gray hair for it to colonize. Maybe the shit has been sitting on the pile too long or something, I don't know.

I have never had to stomp the water out. Maybe this is why you're bulks are colonizing so slowly. You probably should just set the pillow case in the sink over night. In the morning if its too wet, just hand squeeze it all over. Stomping it is probably making it too dry. Mycelium is like a filter for nutrients, if there is not enough water to help it adsorb nutrients, it will colonize slowly. Also you could increase the spawn ratio. On the double tubs, you do have the poly fill holes covered with plastic tape during colonization, rite? Also you could put plastic over the sub, it helps.

I do have the top polyfil holes covered with a trashbag during incubation, but not tape. I guess maybe I'm confused as to how wet or moist the shit should be when incubating.
