Draiage holes in plant pots?.
    #486297 -

Hi,
I'm ready to plant my seedlings in to large pots. I'm worried about soil loss through the large drainage holes and was wondering what others used to stop this problem while keeping drainage at it's best. All help much appreciated.
Thanks all.

Line the bottom of the pot with gravel or lava rock that is big enough not to go through the drainage holes. Usually an inch or so of gravel lining will do, but it depends how deep your pots are. I prefer to use lava rock pecause it is porous and holds lots of water in its nooks and crannies. I also mix a little lava rock into my soil mix. You can find bags of lava at Home Depot or any garden supply store, and it is pretty cheap. Good luck!

Or, after watering the first time little will be lost, the only problem with using rock for seedlings is when you transplant, and you most likely will transplant, the roots will bind to the rock and that makes transplanting a disturbance to roots and a bit of a hassle when you dump them out...I would water the empty pot l as normal , then plant the seedling and water lightly...

Like someone else said, you may lose some the first time, but after that, you should lose any more soil. I don't use any rocks or anything on the bottoms of mine and it all works out fine. But if your still paranoid you could use a few larger river stones. The only problem with using say a filter disk is that it can hold water and attract bacteria or fungus to the pot, which can lead to severe problems. Exactly the reason I stopped putting anything in the bottom of my pots except soil

I always used to put a round piece of newspaper on the bottom before adding the soil. Works great but really isn't necessary.

yeah geolite would help but the more or larger the holes the better. This is because it makes leeching salts out much easier.
