possible gym
    #4881824 -

I posted on the hunting forum, but I am putting these up here too.
They are probably gyms, and were growing on the base of this tree.

(If you look carefully, you can see other specimens.) They were about 6cm tall, with a 1.5cm cap. No spore print was possible, though orange/brown appears to be a safe guess judging from the gills. Annulus present. Very sturdy stalk that seems wiry upon drying. Widening toward the base. Topical purple bruising after drying. Slightly decurrent gills.

You can see they are similar to my other gyms that I previously posted what with the bulbous base of the stalk and so on.
They are without the purple bruising, though, and the previous specimens also dried a darker color.

To me the new photos look like gyms of some kind. Any ideas?

They look like Gymnopilus to me, too. The ring helps narrow things down quite a bit - there are only 16 species in subgenus Annulati. Unfortunately, the main features we need to know about for the key in the monograph require that we know the spore size and if they're dextrinoid, and the presence (or not) of pleurocystidia and caulocystidia.

Does the cap surface have scales or hairs (you'll need to use a magnifier)? Do they have an odor?

Happy mushrooming!

I found these too, so now I have three gyms not accounted for in my guides.

They were already dried when I found them--again the characteristic purple bruising after drying and tough stringy stalk. It was growing on wood, but what the hell would you call a thing like that they are growing from--must be part of the root, but it was not firm as it appears to be.

Can iodine alone be used to determine if spores are amyloid, dextrinoid, or inamyloid?

georgeM - If by "iodine" you mean Tincture of Iodine (like you can buy at the grocery store in the first aid section), yes, it seems to work. I have tried it on lots of different things along with Melzer's and found no differences yet. There may be something out there where they won't be the same, but I haven't seen it.

Happy mushrooming!
