Nice!! I love Gyms!
I'm assuming those are in the spectabilis complex?
I've found 3 types of Gyms (2 which are def. active) in the last week or so.
Keep up the good hunting and great pics!

Thanks all. Senor, I'd call them lutes, but I'm not 100% sure.

Do you mean luteus or luteofolius?
No way they are luteofolius, they might be luteus though but I'm leaning towards junonius.

They're not G. spectabilis/junonius, too light in color, look like they grew singly and possibly from a log.
Lutes is slang for Gymnopilus luteus; Luteos is slang for Gymnopilus luteofolius.
Falcon: did they smell like anus, er, anise?

Probably the worst tasting thing I ever ate in my life, ever...ever ever. I gagged like 6 times last night. I probably should have chopped them up and put them in a liquid.

Kinda wondering the same thing what level of activity was there? Was it worth gagging them down?Would you do it again?

Well the experience was kind of ruined, but it was all my fault. I gagged about 27 fresh grams of gymnopilus spectabilis down, and chased them with orange juice. It was quick to set in, the butterfly's and what not. The only problem was I ended up being around a bunch of drunk people and it kind of ruined the little bit of feeling I got from them. The only times I could really have fun with them is when I put my hood over my eyes or just looked up at the stars and just zoned everyone out. I got home and got on here to look at a few posts and saw the usual vibrant colors. I'm not saying they didn't work, I'm saying that I ruined them. If I were to eat them again I think I would chop them up and put them in a drink so I wouldn't have to chew them.

Falcon: did they smell like anus, er, anise?
Senor, yep, it had that ass er spicy gym smell, it tastes spicy too. They match the description of luteus very well, growing for the most part singly or in groups of two or three along a down log.
Tripsis, I've found three logs with this color gyms on them in the last 2 years. This log though produced mushrooms that weren't quite as yellow a couple of years ago.
Danny, that is the dance I do when I find them.
These taste like wild ginger to me with a big heaping of bitter. I like the taste. Sometimes if you get them at this stage, 15g of fresh will be equal to 10g of fresh cubes, once they open up they don't seem as potent to me. I don't eat the mature caps.

Next time try slicing them real thin and frying in butter. I have heard that cuts down on the bitterness.

This might be G. luteofolius, this was found in a weird place, it was growing on the end of a two by eight that had moss on the end it was growing out of the moss. It has an bright yellow gills and an orange print. The cap is about an inch across.

Maybe that little red capped gym wasn't luteofolius, I found some more little ones, these pics are from last October, but there were a bunch on a log all were small as in the pictures, with red caps and stems. The caps blued some as they dried out, shows up a little on the pic with the mushrooms drying on a white piece of paper.
Some pics from yesterday,

Found these today, Red Gyms on a log with blue bruising.
From a distance I thought they were Late Fall oysters, the colors looked like they were Green and Orange.

G. luteofolius can also grow on Oak and Cottonwood. That looks like Elm to me. If you have a microscope and some KOH, toss them under the scope and see if they turn color. If they do they are probably G. aeruginosus. Melzer's won't help, they are both dextrinoid.

I went back and looked at the tree and it had some bark at the base, looks like maple, probably silver.
I made some slurry out of spore print and couldn't find a spray bottle. but i did have a sqeeze bottle. I was worried that it would squirt out fast so it was thickened by adding the slurry to a water and iota carrageen solution. doing this held the spores in suspension.
the spores measured 4 by 6 or 4 by 7, they had bumps

this certainly seems like it would keep a more even distribution of spores throughout the solution great tek
