Tabs are never saved in formatting when you post

If you type something then want to hit "Tab" and leave that extra white space, it won't letya.

how do you even get a /tab into the message?

reply and quick reply pages move you to the 'Continue/Submit'
button when you hit tab....

I do know that all leading and trailing whitespace is formatted out
of posts and possibly between words as well.

yeah, they are probably running the following:

s/\t//g
s/^\s+//g
s/\s+$//g
s/\s+/ /g

Yup.

I posted a bunch of old poetry in my journal and had to lose a bunch of tabs and extra spaces between words. If we could even have a smiley called :space: that was one text space and as big as the tallest letter in the font, I would just copy and paste that.

It's not possible to put tabs in HTML, they're interpreted as regular spaces. However, if you put the text within [code] tags it's rendered as <pre>formatted with the tabs preserved:
