Where would it get the energy to continue breaking bonds (a process which is generally thermodynamically unfavorable)? As long as energy is required, there is a bottleneck. I'm assuming you mean actual covalent bonds and not hydrogen bonds, since these are made and broken millions of times per second anyway...

Ever heard of a 'catalyst'

Energy can easily be obtained from the surrounding environment, namely in the form of thermal energy.

And yeah, I was talking about covalent bonds between hydrogen and anything else.

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

Wishing the comming of nanotechnology is a horrible thing. It will be the end of the world.

Lets say the world is flat, and just ignore the posibility.
Fear, the mind killer.

As someone who designs self-assembling molecules for a living, I think its total bullshit. Even Eric Drexler, the guy who started the whole nano-scare with his sci-fi book, has publicly retracted his "hypothesis" if you can even call sci-fi a hypothesis. The fact that he even had to go public and quell the fear about nano-tech shows a massive lack of understanding of chemistry and physics in our society.

nanotechnoligy isn't much comoared to quantum technology. With a quantum computer values would be able to be in two places at once, binary values could be both 1 and 0 at the same time. It would take less than a nanosecond to do most tasks. That is the real prize, nanotechnology doesn't mean much since electricty can't move much faster than it does now (without supercooling of course).

A catalyst can only accelerate processes which are already thermodynamically favorable.  They can't make an unfavorable process into a favorable one.  Bond breaking is always unfavorable (unless coupled to the creation of more stable bonds).  Thus, the breaking of covalent bonds between hydrogen and something else would only proceed if you were, say, combining the products with oxygen (for example).  This process releases a lot of heat, which would likely destroy any nanobot and is limited by the availability of oxygen.
