Weekends with Summit
    #4741982 - 10/01/05 08:17 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I'm geting back into a regular routine these days. Exercise, eating right, less alcohol, you know how it goes. Anyway, a part of my new routine is going to be getting out every weekend and taking a hike. Short or long, it doesn't matter. I just need to get out more then I have been lately. And I figured I would share my adventures with all of you.

So here is the first installment in Weekends with Summit....

I am lucky to have access to a great hiking area just 15 minutes drive from my house (Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area). For today's excursion I decided to hike up Oak Creek Canyon. Here I am at the trailhead. Oak Creek is the canyon to the left of me. (sorry about the hazy picture, a lot of smoke in the air today from the California fires).

Its about a mile and a half across open desert to reach the mouth of the canyon. Then you have to find a way down into the canyon bottom (through thick scrub and undergrowth) and start making your way up the canyon in a mostly dry creek bed that is covered in large boulders.

As the canyon narrows the going sometimes gets tricky. You have to find ways to climb up or around dry waterfalls that are often 20 feet high, and in places like the picture below you even have to pass through slots or passages to continue on (to the left of me in the picture).

I went about a mile up the canyon. I stopped to take a break and have a bite to eat under a large overhanging cliff.

Here the canyon forks. You can continue on to the left...

...or to the right...

I wasn't prepared to hike any farther then this point (only had 2 liters of water with me) so after a break I started back down.

As I said before, the canyon is mostly dry. There are areas where there are springs and water runs through the canyon year round in certain places. Here I am standing about 15 feet above this pool and the water in the pool is about 2-3 feet deep in the center.

There is a lot of moss growing in the pools but the water is not at all stagnate. In fact, it is very clear and clean looking (it is fed by springs and flows continuously). I still wouldn't try to drink it without filtering it, but I have used these desert water sources many times in the past to replenish my supplies.

I found a bunch of little frogs all around one pool also. They were pretty groovy little fellas...

Here is a picture to give you an idea of their size. They were TINY!

So the whole hike was about a 5 mile round trip and I spent a little less then 4 hours doing it. It was a very nice, relaxing way to spend a Saturday!

And here is today's trivia question...
Identify this object and name the animal that left it behind.{question edited for accuracy} (sorry about the blurry picture, and the fact that I didn't put in anything for size reference. Each peice is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long)

I will post the answer (and a follow-up picture) in a day or two. First correct guess gets 5 shrooms from the guy who never rates anybody (that'd be me).

of course I would be the first to take  a guess!

from my shitty experiences, i would theorize that in the desert, but rocky area, it would be a rock chuck/rodent or a ring tail cat SCAT

i want a visit, no shroom ratings if I win!, and.... how do you know exactly what critter left you the present?  seen the action have you??? hehe

glad to see you being outside regularly again!

First guess is not bad, but not correct.  Sorry Annie.  I'll explain how I know who left it with the follow up picture and expanation.

Meanwhile, I'll go take a guess in your thread!

Man, I just realized a mistake I made. It was unfair for me to word the question as I did since the item pictured would not be correctly identified as 'scat'. So let me rephrase the question...

Correctly identify the item pictured and the animal who left it behind.

Nope, not an insect egg/casing. Keep the guesses coming.

This forum is still so slow that I'll let it go for a while so a few people will have a chance to guess. I want to at least give the regulars a shot at it before I give the answer.

Not coyote or fox.

Just a hint....its not really "poo".

And yes, there is some amazing climbing just a few minutes drive from my house. Too bad I don't climb much (at least no technical climbing).

DING! DING! DING!  We have a winner!

'Owl pellets' are the undigestable parts of animals that owls eat (mainly bones and fur) that collect in an owls stomach.  The owl expels these so-called pellets much the same way a cat coughs up a hiarball.  Owl pellets can be quite interesting to disect.  Pellets from large owls can be 4-6 inches and contain complete skulls of small mammals.

Here is the same owl pellet pictured above after I pulled it apart.  Notice that it is mostly matted hair and some bones.
