Weekends With Summit - Part 2 October 8, 2005
Got up, had some breakfast and coffee, and packed my bag. Headed for Redrock Canyon at about 8AM. Wasn't sure where I'd hike today, just thought I'd figure it out as I go. Here is the view from my truck less then 15 minutes after leaving my house...

It was a beautiful day outside but the wind was blowing really hard. 25-30 MPH steady wind and gusting at times to over 40. But the temperature was perfect for hiking otherwise.
A couple months ago they had a wildfire in Redrock Canyon. With the wet winter/spring last year and the heavy spring growth it made for dangerous fire conditions in mid-summer. And all it took was one bolt of lightning to set off a blaze that burned a couple thousand acres.

This is what the desert should look like. This area did not burn...

The hike I ended up doing was of no great significance. I hiked up to the base of La Madre, an 8000ft peak which I have summited in the past. La Madre is a very bland looking mountain as you can see...

...but the view looking back into Redrock canyon from there is specatacular!

I also had a good view of Turtlehead Peak (you can see more pics of a hike I did on this one if you search for my "Superbowl Sunday" thread in The Pub). And in the background, to the right of center in the pic, is part of the Las Vegas valley (my neighborhood, to be precise).

Here is a pic I took along the trail that I kinda like...

And just for you rock-climbers, one more pic of Redrock I took as I drove out. If you are a climber you'd love it here!

The whole hike was about 5 mile round trip and only took about an hour and 45 min (including photo stops and a break at the top). If it wasn't for the damn wind it would've been a perfect day!
And now for the trivia question from today's hike...
What caused/created these bowl-shaped domes? (The one pictured is about 30 feet in diameter)

There will once again be a follow-up pic to help answer the question. The first answer which I think is close enough (its at my discretion so no bitching!) wins the prize...which is, of course...the coveted "5 shrooms from Summit"

Man those are some awe-inspiring pictures!
I would guess a landslide or erosion of some sort.

That would be a much cooler answer then the real one, but sorry. Keep guessing guys. No right answer yet.
Oh, and the camera is a Sony dsc-f828. Yes, 8 megapixel. Pris has the same one.

"What caused/created these bowl-shaped domes?" The answer is man. What is my prize?
But if you want something more specific, I'll guess backed up water from a dam or reservoir.

Also...nice pictures. I've hiked through Zion national park before. Very nice.
I'd love to take another trip out that way.

There is something (salt?)underneath those domes to prevent contaminants from leaking into water that's coming from an aquifer.

Sorry if the pics aren't that good. It was a hard thing to capture it in a photo. It is a mound that is about 30 feet across and maybe 3-4 feet high at the most. In the center, on top of the mound, is a bowl-shaped indentation (kinda looks like a little crater).
And yes, its man-made.

Hmmm, good question. Not sure exactly how to answer that so I won't. When I post the answer (and follow up pic) you can decide for yourself.

OK, its been a week. I guess I don't give out a rating this time.
I would've accepted 'fire pit' or 'cooking pit' or any variation of that. Maybe would've even given it up for 'campfire'. Here's a photo of a trailside sign to explain it all.

a firepit is intentional, i mean they didnt dig the pit then be like "ok now what do use this thing for."

a firepit is intentional, i mean they didnt dig the pit then be like "ok now what do use this thing for."
But if you think about it maybe they didn't intentionally build the mound. Maybe the mound grew out of the fact that they kept using the same spot for the fir pit.
You see my dilema in answering the question. I didn't want to be accused of giving out misleading information.
