Weekends with Summit - Part 5 October 30, 2005
Since I started my WWS threads I realized that I have not actually done any summits!! So this week I decided to change that.
This weeks adventure is an excursion to an 11,060 foot summit known as Griffith Peak. Funny thing is that if I look out the window over my right shoulder as I type this I can see this peak from my house!
The trail I chose to take (there are several ways to approach this peak) is accessed from about 10 miles of dirt road...

Once at the trailhead you start walking up the west side of a canyon called Lovell Canyon on an old fire road. You are on the opposite side of Lovell Canyon from Griffith Peak. Here is the view looking across the canyon at the mountain...

When you finally reach the head of the canyon you get a nice view looking back down Lovell Canyon...

From here you can also see down the other side into Kyle Canyon (where there is a community of year round residents)...

...and if you look up toward the summit you can also see Mount Charleston (almost 12,000 feet) in the distance. The trail goes up through the cliffs in the center...

Here is the trail as it passes through the cliffs...

And as the trail traverses up the side of the mountain you go through forests...

...and meadows.

At this point you get a good look back at where you came from as well as your first good view of the Las Vegas valley. Notice the fire road that consisted of the first 2 miles of the hike. And also, the small peak right in front of Las Vegas (that looks like a nose sticking up on the horizon) is Turtlehead Peak. Search for my "Super Bowl Sunday" thread in the pub to see more pics of a hike there...

As the trail wraps around the back of the peak and approaches the summit it got snowy. The first snow of the year fell just last week...

Finally, about 3 hours after starting, I reached the summit. Here you can see the sign-in box at the summit as well as Mount Charleston in the background.

And here is the view looking towards Las Vegas...

The trail from here to Mount Charleston summit leads 7 miles up the ridgeline beyond. I've done it a few times. Charleston stands nearly a thousand feet taller then this summit. If you look close you can see the trail going up through the meadows towards Charleston.

And here is one more pic of the lonely summit and the dead tree which makes a great place to hang your shit while you are there.

The trip was about 8 or 9 miles round trip with an elevation change of over 3000 feet from trailhead to summit. Total trail time was a little over 5 hours.
