Actually, Darwin never used that phrase. "Survival of the fittest" was coined by Herbert Spencer, the first advocate of social darwinism.

I never said that Spencer came up with the idea. I said that Darwin never used that particular phrase.

Interesting fact: Despite being considered the originator of Social Darwinism, Spencer published his social theories at least two years before Darwin published Origin of Species. Thus, not only did Darwin not coin the phrase "survival of the fittest," but the phrase actually predates his work.
