Costa Rica abandoned its military budget a couple years back, which would make you think it was some forward-thinking paradise or some shit, but I think it's pretty dangerous, lots of Americans get kidnapped.

3 friends of mine lived there from January until July, working at a school teaching english, german, basic math and sciences, etc.
they all loved it, and never had any problems, except TONS of hookers trying to pick them up every time they went out.
that and they said the average costa rican girl is a bit tubby.

He's going there with wifey on his honeymoon, so unless she wants to pick up a third I think that don't matter much to Sucky.

Why don't you just go to a Club Med in Florida? I bet that's real romantic!

dunno but get a cabana for around 15 a night and eat lots of lobster. You can live well for about 30 or 40 bucks a day.

Whoa now everybody - what's with all this talk of Costa Rica being unsafe? It is one of the safest central American countries we can visit, and having spent two weeks there myself a couple years back, I can attest to the fact that the people there are kind and funloving! I mean don't go walking down any dark alleys in downtown San Jose at nighttime and you should be just fine.
We started out in San Jose of course, trucked on out eastwards towards the banana plantations and eventually arrived at Tortoguero on the Atlantic side of the country, after taking a three hour trip via their canal highways to get there! You probably wouldn't want to go swimming on this side, since the gulf ocean is filled with plenty of sharks, jellyfish, and plenty of sharp teeth - not to mention if there's a weather system in town that water is going to be absolutely torrentous, as it was when we walked down the beach at night to see the giant 400lb sea turtles diggin' pits in the sand to bury their eggs in the midst of a lightning storm.
From there we circled back through the rainforests where we spent some time hiking in the Cloud Forest and rolling down zip-lines through the canopy of the trees (one of which was over a mile long and about a mile off the ground stretched between two mountain peaks!). We also took a one-day rafting excursion on our way towards the Pacific side of the country.
The Pacific side definitely feels more "westernized" if you will. The surf-city of Jaco almost feels like a resort spot in Mexico with some fine eateries and hotels, and very nice beaches for laying out or surfing. Again, I can't stress how friendly all the people we encountered were. Tourism is a large part of Costa Rica's income, so there is no reason to expect the place to be hostile towards Americans.
Two other items of interest on our trip were visiting the Arenal Observatory and the Volcano accompanying it. Beautiful countryside, from where we took a day-long horseback ride over the saddle of a mountain where we scheduled for a bus to pick us up and carry us along to our next destination.
All in all, the place is suceptible to tropical humidity and lightning storms quite regularly. The central and Pacific areas would best cater to the American tourist, and the rainforests and volcanos are definitely a worthwhile sight for adventerous eyes!
PS. Toss back a few Rock Ice's for me
