first timer question

My friend put his cakes in the terrarium about a week ago and he's starting to see some pins form. However hes not seeing any actually grow up, they are just getting fatter and rounder(like balls). Is this a sign that there is too much or too little of something? He is using an ultasonic humidifier, giving them light a few times a day, and fanning them ocassionally. What is going on? Any help is apprieciated
