To increase the amount of dopamine in the brain of patients with diseases such as Parkinson's disease, a synthetic precursor to dopamine such as L-DOPA can be given, since this will cross the blood-brain barrier.

I've never seen heroin. I know one person that has done it, but it IV'd it when he was a tweaker living in so cal. We don't have junkies, we ONLY have tweakers. The only drugs that are readily available are stimulants.

You already have dopamine in your system. You can't "take" it like a drug, it's a neurotransmitter. You have to find ways to act on that part of your brain. Exercise, eat some ice-cream or take some heroin.

You can't dose yourself with dopamine, it wouldn't be natural anyway.

There is a natural source of L-Dopa. The velvet bean contains about 7% by weight (if memory serves). You can indeed increase the production of dopamine with the administration of L-Dopa, L-Tyrosine or L-Phenylalanine. The closer to L-Dopa, the easier the conversion, the pathway is something like this: L-Phenylalanine => L-Tyrosine => L-Dopa => Dopamine => Norepinephrine => Epinephrine (adrenaline). Keep in mind that there are feedback mechanisms in the brain which serve to stabilize the production and release of neurotransmitters, L-Phenylalanine and L-Tyrosine administration will initially result in increased production and release of dopamine (and the other related neurotransmitters) but the levels will taper off (I can't remember if the same thing goes for L-Dopa). L-Phenylalanine and L-Tyrosine also compete with several other amino acids for the same transport mechanism across the blood brain barrier and hence should be taken on an empty stomach (I think L-Dopa gets in via a different way).
