Are flies a big problem?
    #464836 - 11/20/01 06:16 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Supposing that one were to try to grow some Thai Koh Samui's using the Dung Brother's kit, would the appearance of a lot of tiny fuit flies be a problem? I was worried that I was getting cobweb mold and then when those came up I thought that all hope was lost, but shortly after that, pinning began and everything seems to be going well, but the fruit flies have not subsided.. Thanks for your help.

ew..flies are a problem...
my advice: use a citronella candle from walmart.
puscle advised to spray a tiny bit (relativly safe) of raid on the lid of the chamber.

you may experience a case of "rosecomb" (IMO) using chemicals, especially if they are petroleum based.

both would work. take yer pick.

fruit flies suck ass. they bring contams to your stuff. an interesting thing i've noted is that they'll only appear on already decaying mycelial biomass... i'd put it on quarentine or outdoors, watch out not to contam your whole project bcs of this one...

Rosecomb is when you get a demented twisted margin on the cap of a fruit... I have fruitflies or gnats big time... they burrow into the casing and lay red lumpy egg sacks (these are the australians ones - dont know about american ones) but they only hassle my puerto casings and show no interest in my other casings...Every time i fan, i see them scurrying for cover from the puertos but from nowhere else...

Citronella candles do not keep bugs away guys. They only mask your presence from bugs like mosquitos. Clean up and start over

there is no absolute way to completely rid yourself of such contamination/pest...there are only quick fixes like citrnella candles and raid, etc.
In his case this is his only casing/cake (?), no such reason that he should throw it out unless the flies have done damage. the flies dont actually do the damage, its the larvae that do it, the flies are just the carrier.

after this casing/cake has been done whether damage has occured or not, then should he take sterility precautions making sure everything has sustained proper sterilzation technique before he attempting to start anew. and throughout the rest of the growing process.

you are correct in the factual sense though.

rosecomb is a physical mutation/deformation of the fruitbody...actually the cap of the shroom. caused by contact with pretroleum based products.
part of the cap will rise up and expose its gill out and upwards like a wave. its nothing bad, it just looks weird.
una made a post about it. there is a picture there. try to search for it.

at the end of the day, my puertos still fruited with three slow slushes, so other than being annoying the gnats didnt do shit - more interest in my peatmoss than the fruits...

Well, for everyone who had something helpful to say, thank you very much. In any case, the flies disappeared as mysteriously as they came and I have just picked 5 large and healthy mushrooms..And everything looks very happy...So I'm happy.
