Pale bluing woodlover from JLF
    #462576 - 11/18/01 05:26 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Well I was checking the exotic patches today and one of them fruited. It was labeled "JLF baeocystis" but I knew it couldn't be Psilocybe baeocystis because the print was enormous. I got it a couple of years ago from Ryche Hawk that got it from JLF as a free gift or something. It was/is still in the JLF label and packaging and I'll take a photo of the label if I still have it (pretty sure I do).

At any rate I put it on wood chips and it reacted aggressively like azurescens. I planted it a bit late in the summer the year before last and it didn't fruit the following Fall. But this Fall it has finally fruited and I don't know what to make of it. Its a bluing psilocybe (which is good) but what species is beyond me at this time. It is very very pale when young and ages to a greyish color. It might be Psilocybe arcana but that is a very new species and I need to break out the scope and Czech. description for that.

If anyone has any suggestions on what Psilocybe species it might be, I'd appreciate the feedback.

I should point out that all the pictures are of moist mushrooms. These are not drying to the pale color like you might expect from Psilocybe bohemica. At this time I don't know what a partially dried specimen looks like. I just noticed them today and unfortunatley it looks like a few got a bit old

Here is a picture of the unknown mushroom compared to Psilocybe azurescens on the right. I attempted to get prints from the unknowns with minimal success. Very poor spore deposits.

Well, ermm, uhhhhh............... Don't they always look about the same every year? I guess I just don't see them as quite as astounding as I once did. I think I got a picture somewhere around here from this year.

if you go to the erowid vaults you can see their pics of p. bohemica and see they are different in appearance to other pics I have seen(both stamets and here as well) the shrooms pictured there look very similar to what you have there.
btw found cannon beach azures again, yet they were very unprintable, no spore drop from prime specimins after 24 hours

Yes, I do plan on doing that. I think it will be especially interesting to see how different cubensis compare. I have held off from doing this so far because I don't have a stage micrometer (a glass slide with a microscopic ruler engraved on it) to accurately measure anything. But it is something I will be working on in the near future.

Well they macroscopically resemble P. bohemica but also look similar to Baeocystis without the nipple or umbo and some resemble Psilocybe caerulipes and caerulescens a little, macroscopically that is.

Send me a print and I can get it identified within a week or two.
