What Kind of Person Runs Over A Deer and Leaves It In the Road?
    #4614832 - 09/02/05 11:25 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I was driving and saw somebody had run over a deer and left it in the left lane. I'm not sure if it was still alive. I was pretty startled so I kept driving but I called the State Patrol. Anyways, the guy who thought he was cool enough to fly down a narrow road at night didn't even bother to see if it was alive or move it before other people ran it over. Furious. That's just wrong.

What should he do?

He could have at least got it off the road. The one time I've hit a deer, I drug its carcass into the ditch.

Lame waste. I'd take it home and rack and skin it. I've seen a deer cleaned and never done it but it's pretty messy. I'd save the heart and any meat areas of the body that were not infected with shattered bone fragments. That is if I hit the deer myself or it were still fresh. I'd cure the skin too, deer skins are old time with their warmth.

My mother hit a deer once. She couldn't have moved that thing out of the road to save her life. She did stop though. People kept stopping to ask her if she was going to take it home with her.

The person could have dragged it to the side of the road or called the Highway Patrol like I did. They could have done SOMETHING, insted they did nothing at all.I hope nobody got in an accident swerving out of the way.

I know. :frown:

I was on the way to work, though, so I really didn't have time. I felt terrible for wasting it, though. A few years earlier my parents hit one and we feasted on that thing for a while.

As long as you felt bad or at least honored the spirit of the deer in your mind it ain't so bad. That is, for people who believe in the bullshit spirit world winkwink;)

Shroomism: I love deer meat. We had deer tenderloin stir fry for two weeks over here and after that it was stew or burgers with the less good cuts.

I think it's time to do deer hunting at 3am on the backwood alpharetta roads

several years ago I was driving home from work. it was just after sunset and there was serious traffic on this road that ran near a forest preserve - this was odd. as I approached the cause of this traffic, I saw a dear laying on the road. It was twitching and screaming.

it was really horrible to see that. I called the police on my cell & they said they had a cruiser en route. Hopefully the cop got there quick enough to put it out of its misery.

the sound of it screaming really freaked me out.

I KNOW RIGHT?!?!? Here in West Virginia we at least have the decency to eat the thing. I mean, it messed up your grill, shouldnt you make the best of it? We have a law that allows us to eat stuff we hit. Check it out, its true. Might as well make the best of a bad situation by eating the corpse of a freak car accident right?!?!?

I saw a deer get hit, it had both of it's back legs broken and was scrambling around the road. I drug it to the side and put it down. It was hunting season. I hate killing animals but It was suffering.

Eating it or not, it should not be in the road. If it is still alive that is cruel, and if it is dead it is dangerous to drivers and makes a disgusting mess.

Hmm. After reading this thread, I think I shall now carry a gun with me in my car, in case of the event that I come across a living but dying/suffering animal on the road that must be put out of its misery.

Unless you know what you are doing you shouldn't get out and try to move a deer off of the road by yourself.  They can be very dangerous if they happen to not be dead. You should call the highway patrol and report it if you can. When I lived in Wisconsin I believe it was the law to report it as a kill, and your were given the chance to claim it as a kill if it was in good enough condition to harvest meat. Otherwise it would be dragged to the roadside and painted with an X like the other misfortuned overpopulates.  :smirk:
