I prefer the 1st for MILK, the second for BUTCHERING.

For use as a mushroom growing SUBSTRATE, weathered h/poo is far better.

the experienced growers have shown over and over that horse manure is far superior to cow. you can use the store bought stuff and get minimal results or find a local horse farm and go for gold. perform a search and read for yourself.. there are hundread of posts to look through regarding this topic.

Most store bought bagged shit, is exactly that, I.,E., SHIT .

If you want to spend big bucks (?) on a large (10 to 20 ton) wheat straw, manure based super supplemented compost pile on a drainage base, along with eqt to monitor, water, shred & turn it. You can make an optimal compost tailored just for dung lovers: carbon / nitrogen ratio <17:1, nitrogen 2.7%, phosphorus 0.2-05%, potassium 1.5-2.5%, calcium 1.5-2.5%, available boron <2 ppm, available ammonium <10 ppm, soluble salts 3.0-5 OdS/m.

You sure can, if you have the means. But, once made - the next thing is to store it, in a way that it will not continue to compost & stays contaminant free. Which is neither easy -or- cheap to do.

The advantage of such a custom made substrate is that it contains as much as 15 to 18% dead cells of thermophilic microbes, various bacteria, and actinomycetes "firefang", which are the very things that deliver OPTIMAL protein, fat (lipids) & micro-nutrients components (Chitin - for instance) to the mushroom.

A positive correlation of substrate nitrogen and yield has been well proven in commercial edible?s cultivation. The greater the nitrogen content (up to a certain point), the higher the yield. And, in the case of P. Cubensis (arguably) delivering far higher potency.

On the other hand, with a little effort - you can most often find a pick/up truck load of well weathered horse manure, that will store (dry) for years & comes in a pretty close second to custom compost above, for free - or maybe $20 - if you have to pay for it, at all.

So, you be the judge, as to which is easy & the most cost effective. That should be a NO BRAINER. H/poo wins out - every time - when you consider the investments involved. The only exception being - if you already have the means & eqt to make a custom compost, at no -or- little extra cost - to yourself.

heck, you don't even have to lie about the rose garden. lies sometimes make people act nervous and others can often pick up on such body language. just say you need old weathered h/poo for your garden because you heard it was the best to use.

might even save you some time by looking thru the phone book for horse farms/ranches/stables and make a couple of calls before you leave.

just an idea.

that's the good thing about where i live.. i live in Kentucky. We got horses every freaking place...lol but this is where my curse comes in. My wife wont let me go get any poo and pasteurize it. People say when you pasteurize it, it smells earthy like dirt and i told her but still no go. BUT she will let me buy it pre pasteurized :frown:  maybe after we need to keep paying money for it over and over again she might give in and at least give a shot...lol

is there a best season to go collecting in? Summer or fall so it's dry? If I filled my car with tubs of poo, I wouldn't need to go often.

just driving around? I'd be tempted to call ahead to ask. I don't have a car, so I'd have to borrow my friend's. I don't want to waste the time, gas and car favor withot finding anything. Hell, I've got two weeks with no supervisor at work, I can probably come up with something.

a sheet of metal gets real hot laying flat with the sun beaming down on it. i would try to get a piece to put the poo on to dry it that way.

even aluminum foil, turned with the shiney side up, would accelerate the drying.

just more ideas...

Yeah but you must leach it first, and you must dry it all before you store it. Thats why its best to hit up farms or stables where horses are for long periods of time, they usually pile it up, or you can just go out into the fields and get the preleached, preaged, predried stuff.
