Could Black Kow manure be counterproductive?
    #11712637 - 12/24/09 03:15 PM (15 years, 27 days ago)

In my most recent tub I neglected to use the black kow manure that I has sitting around and my sub colonized much quicker than when I had used it. I made this impromptu monotub because I had two PF tek jars that had invitro pinning that I didn't want to fruit as normal.  I had 8 cakes going already that I was using simply to get clone specimens from and my FC was getting kinda full.  So since I had some leftover coir, gypsum, coffee grounds and such sitting around and a rubbermaid from a pointless TiT I made, I figured I would make a mini- monotub.  I had some black kow out in the shed that I was going to use again but it was raining that night and cold as hell so I didn't feel like running out there to get it.  The thing is is that this time the ratio was also much lower than when I used the black kow.  My first tray had 1qt of spawn to 1 gallon of sub, and this one has 1 pint of spawn to 2 gallons of sub, and it colonized much quicker, the only other difference was I didn't use the black kow this time but everything else was the same.  Of course there could be other elements at play here but it almost seems to me that the black kow was possibly hindering speedy growth.  Ideas?

Black Kow is composted cow manure. It works just fine. When you use it as your bulk substrate you should mix it 50/50 of manure/coir. I've seen no diffrence in colonization times between manure/coir and coir on its own. When it comes down to colonization times your incubation conditions and proper water content affect it greatly. Also when using store bought manure always leach the manure 18-36 hours to evaporate any traces of urea. To leach leave manure on a tarp in the sun.

Composted cow manure is denser, thus will take longer to colonize, since there's more of it to colonize.  Don't be fooled by fast colonization.  A loose airy substrate will always colonize faster than a denser, more nutritious substrate, but the payoff for the latter generally comes with better fruiting performance.

Thank you for both responses.  Very helpful info.  I didn't realize you still need to leach composted manure.  Also the substrate density was something I did not consider.  My first sub tray never fully colonized, but it did fruit prolifically.  I guess I will have to see how this one fruits to see if there is any noticeable difference in the growth.  RR, you infer that a more dense substrate will be better for fruiting, but do you think adding composted manure to a coir sub mix is beneficial in terms of providing more nutrients to the myc?  Is there not already enough nutrients in the coir alone?
I assume the goal is to find the happy medium between not too dense,  not too airy, and simultaneously nutritive enough.
