My new vocation is calling

Three weeks ago I quit my job. I've been a registered nurse for 10 years. I just paid off my student loan last year..YAY, I own my education. After 10 years of underemployment,increasing workloads,decreasing pay and,worst of all, rapidly increasing liabilities, I decided I needed a break from nursing(the longer the better). About 35km from me is a..wait for it.. mushroom farm! I went to check it out with my wife and her friend. Everyone else was choking on the fumes and I was thinking "this ain't too bad!" . I've asked around and it seems that that just about EVERYONE in the area has worked there at one time or another for one very good reason ... the MONEY. It seems you can make anywhere from 40k-70k(CDN) picking shrooms.I think they're just yer run of the mill white buttons.Supposedly it's pretty hard work and you do earn your money. I'm not too thrilled about the hours either 6:30 am to 6:00 pm(5:30 am starts for special orders).
I went in to apply but was told "We just hired a whole whack of people,when we find out who can't take it,we'll call you."
Anyhow,ya think I should act like I have zero knowledge of or interest in mycology? (muckywhat? I thought they was mushrooms,dude). Perhaps I can become an expert working for both sides. So,for now,I'm no longer a nurse taking shit from everyone. I'll be a mushroom harvester crawling through shit to get a good paycheck.

I think you DEFINITELY should work there if it brings home the dough. Why hide your knowledge? Maybe you could move up the ranks. There's lots of types of mushrooms out there- just fill in the blanks.

I can see myself every morning...finding a supervisor and showing him my duffle bag full of jars and demanding to know "Is this Myc or cobweb?"

This sounds like tough work. I don't know if you will really have any new teks to offer them, unless you have done your own bulk grows that were so large they required you to hire people to pick the shrooms. :smirk: I would try and learn as much about the business as possible and try to get your own going. Then you could hire your own pickers. :thumbup:
