Hey, Im setting up a PMP, and i was wondering if those of you who have one could post some pics of it, to help me out. Maybe just tell about some of the minor details that you may have tweaked to get a successful FC. Thanks.

Also, how do i sterilize this perlite in a microwave?

The tek on the PMP doesn't really need any improvement IME. Also, I don't think microwaving perlite is necessary and I'm not sure that it is safe either, but don't quote me on that. Just mix some peroxide in with your water when you wet the perlite down. I have never had problems with the perlite causing contams though.

I would suggest against placing perlite in a PMP! I tried it once and just ended up with a nasty mess. get some lava rocks, the ones for grills and use them in place of hydroton. I have had great success with lava rocks.

no perlite?! Everybody says to use perlite humidity though. its messy? does everyone think i should use something other than perlite?

perlite is fine when you use it by itself. With the PMP it will clog up the airtubes and be harder to keep running optimally.

Perlite is used when you have no air pump. The PMP uses air through water in the tub to create humidity so you use something a bit chunkier - Lava rocks or geolite

I would go with hydroton/geolite over perlite any day for a PMP, a hella lot less mess.

I second the Hydroton. It works great.
And I am soaking some now in bleach to clean it after growing some cakes out.
No microwaving or baking. Pluse, there is something cool about just placing the cakes right on the Hydroton instead of on lids. I actually had some shrooms on the bottom of this cake that grew between the rocks. I was able to pick them and keep them. If I was using Perilite or Vermiculite underneath they would not have grown down there.

KronnyQ~ What are you setting your cakes on? looks like a screen. why do you do that, are you actually supposed toset it on something or is setting directlyon the geolite ok, like CLUTCH said.

Some put them right on, some don't. It's personal opinion.

I haven't really experimented with both ways, but I like to sit them straight on for reasons I mentioned. The water is wicked up into the cake either way with or without a screen. but the ones he used foil underneath don't have as much water going into the cakes.


It looks like you keep a temp/humidity gauge permanently attached to the inside of your PmP. Most of them quit working if they are left in 24/7. A few hours or so at a time won't hurt them, but leaving them in all the time is just asking to kill them...usually.

How long has yours been like that?

I just put it in there. I havent finished the PMP yet, but i think im gonna have to trash that one anyways. I dont like it. you know where to find a good hum/temp probe?
