Questions regarding HTTP proxy use

Hello, I'm Gina
I'm trying to understand proxys and remain anonymous at times. I have learned how to put a high anonymity proxy address in my LAN settings box. When I run "check my IP" tests, it gives the proxy address. However, there is an adult chatroom I log into and even with the proxy when I /whois myself, it shows my real IP address. What am I doing wrong?
If I try and use a HTTP chain, I can't access the chatroom at all.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Is the "LAN settings box" is the one in Internet Explorer and do you use the chatroom in IE as well? The problem is likely that the /whois function is smart enough to bypass the proxy, or the chatroom doesn't even use the IE connection settings. Could you give your operating system and any programs/plugins you use to connect to the chatroom?

Yes, I'm entering the proxy through "internet options" "connections" and "LAN" settings. I'm also using IE to access the chatroom.
If this is supposed to be such a secure way of being anonymous, how can I be absolutely sure other websites aren't doing the same thing as well and seeing right through the proxy?
How is it possible to "see around" the proxy?
Sorry for all the questions - thanks for your help.

Exactly. Basically, Java is an IE plugin, a separate progam, so what happens is java asks windows for the IP address rather than IE. One solution that might work is to put a router between your internet connection and your computer. That way your pc will have an IP like 192.168.x.x which is a local IP address and will tell people absolutely nothing. This is also beneficial for other types of security, i.e. hacking, trojans, spyware, etc. What kind of connection do you have exactly? Do you have a cable modem or dial-up or what?

I use a cable modem. I already have a router between the modem and my PC as I use a laptop with wireless also.
I'd like to be able to be as anonymous as possible sometimes.

Hmmm... So what IP is shown exactly when you do a /whois? One thing to consider is that you may only get your real IP address because YOU are the one doing the /whois. Maybe when other people /whois you they get the proxy. Oh, if you are worried about security, all I need are the first two parts of the address.
BTW, if you get sick of my jabbering just tell me.
