Routers and Proxies
    #2204022 -

Okay I just got a Router installed, its the Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz Router...and tested it against several IP addies and they didnt give me my "Real" IP--which is great!

Now, I'm curious...being the paranoid person I am since I'm surrounded by hackers, would it be any more super-safe to get a Proxy server in ADDITION to my Router?

Also, I'm not quite really clear on how Router's security systems work, but my main question is...if a hacker had my computer's actual IP address BEFORE I installed the router, would they still be able to, say, track my PC or get into it using that same IP address, even if my PC is now connecting to the internet through the Router, which evidently has some sort of IP-security system of it's own?

Ok, this is kinda my area. I'm a computer admin, and a nerd ;-) so I'm gonna use this post as a way of tryng to educate people on more then just what you are asking about.

Sorry to break it to you but a router does not give you any annonimity. All activity can still be tracked back to your internet connection. True you have an internal IP that will not be accesable from outside, but that does nothing as far as hidind what you are doing on the web.

A proxy is like a re-mailer. It acts as a middle man See below

You --> Proxy --> Whatever you are really accessing

A proxy will hide you, if it is an annonymous proxy, meaning it will not report who is using it. Most web programs allow a person to use a proxy.

Because proxies are so useful at hiding your true identity they are frequently abused. get a big list and rotate what ones you use.

Proxy Checker can be used as a program to check the large lists that you can get off of the web. See my previous post for a huge list of proxies.

Also the more simple but often forgotten is to turn off cookies on whatever browser you use whenever you can.

Depending upon how paranoid you are you can use Free AOL time if you have to. Now they don't require real names or anything.

Routers will act as a Firewall. They will protect you from people outside trying to get in to you computer. Not from people following your activity. Routers are good at being a firewall, but they are not the best. make sure that you use another firewall and keep your computer updated.

Well, okay, thanks alot!, the main thing I was concerned about is whether a hacker could still get INTO my computer even tho I have a router. Or at least the chances of that actually happening. From what I was told, routers make it damn near impossible for hackers to hack a person's PC, that they wont even try--so I just wanted to verify this.

So this is what I'm gonna do:

Me--->Router--->Proxy--->What I'm really accessing

Now that will be some tight security...I'll have more security than friggin Fort Knox. hehehehe.

Yup router acts a a pretty damn good firewall. So unless you piss of someone who is pretty good, you should be perfectly fine.

Proxy is more for annonimity then security.

> whats so special that you keep on your pc that a hacker would want to go to all that trouble to get into???

Nothing, but I don't want to be a host for some yoyo sending spam to others. I also don't want to be a host for some yoyo to run a child pr0n site, or warez site, or etc from my machine.

generally routers will filter packets from entering the network. as far as i know most if not all linksys routers filter packets by default and will not allow packets to be sent into the network without an initiating packet from within the network. routers come in all shapes and sizes, from linksys routers to dedicated linux computers. unfortunatly not all routers and computers for that matter are perfect and are prone to vulnerbility one way or another so if you want to make sure your somewhat safe, make sure you install some firmware upgrades for your linksys router when vulnerbilities are released.
