Clearing up PROXY Questions
    #841786 - 08/25/02 08:19 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

If you are using Internet Explorer:

1. Open browser window
2. Go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections
3. The next step depends on your OP sys, I have XP so I go to LAN Settings,
just look for where it says Use Proxy Server.
4. The next step is to find the server you want to use, I have found this site to be VERY useful http://www.samair.ru/xwww/proxy.htm .
Remember, not all Proxy Servers are truly anonymous and not all
Proxys will hide the fact that you are actually using it. If you look at this site you will see the address and the port number for the proxy. You will also see it's origin, and whether it is anonymous or highly anonymous.

Anonymous - HTTP Proxy server does not send HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR variable to host, this improves privacy since your IP address cannot be logged.

High anonymity - HTTP Servers of this type don?t send HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR, HTTP_VIA and HTTP_PROXY_CONNECTION variables. Host doesn?t even know you are using proxy server an of course it doesn?t know your IP address.

Also keep in mind that depending on what Proxy you choose you may not be able get on to certain sites. Some things are blocked in certain countries.

If you use AOL is it even worth using a proxy?

Some support SSL encryption and some don't, that is about all I know.

I have never, nor will I ever, use AOL so I don't know if it is worth it or not.

If your concerned about AOL monitoring your by using a proxy, i wouldnt bother. They would still be able to see what your doing since you are using them as an internet service and you would first go through them than to the proxy...
i kinda lied aol, i havent been able to use it since version 3.0 since both my mother and fathers CC #'s were banned from using it. hehe, boy did i ever get a talk about that. I could always use my cc# now i guess, but bah, already got a cable connection,.

I use AOL, unfortunately, and since the AOL service acts as a proxy, yes, they will be able to track you down eventually. However, typically ISP's will defend their customer's privacy as long as they can. After all, if you get busted because AOL ratted you out to the authorities, how likely are you to continue paying them? This is actually true for most Internet Service Providers(i.e. Comcast), assuming you have a dynamic IP address rather than a static "real" IP address, and you probably don't have a real IP unless you pay a premium for it.
