Snakes are blind this season, but can detect heat. Bring a laser pointer or something when you go. So not much light is seen.

a laser pointer's not going to do sh.t.

one time several years ago i walked into a pasture at night and a rattle snake rattled against my right pant leg. i jumped about 5 feet in the air and 15 feet to the right and left that field immediately luckily with no bites.

i didnt do a night hunt again for a few years. but haven't had any problems since and still night hunt occassionally.

a laser pointer wouldn't be your best bet for light, but low intensity red spectrum light is harder to see than a flashlight. a red led flashlight is nice.

if you would aviod tresspassing you wouldn't have to worry about it though.

as for snakes; take a walkling stick and probe the ground in front of you as you walk along and you won't have to worry. they will be more dosile at night and will usualy quite gladly move aside.

i wouls recomend hunting during twilight hours, early morning or dusk, when you can see what you're looking at and will be hard to see from a distance of greater than 50 yards. the only drawback is the short period of time these conditions prevail.

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I am really scared of snakes, sometimes I don't even go to my best field because I ran into a rattlesnake once out there. My friends also saw a couple corn snakes, and I'm sure there's probably some CORAL snakes too. I usually wear pants and thick boots even though it probably wouldn't protect me from a pair of FANGS.

Stomp as you walk. The snakes will feel the vibration in the ground and will be long gone before you even get there.

LED,
Headlamp by Princeton Tec..REI $29.99.. LED burns forever you will never have to replace bulbs..
2 AA battery's last me about a year!
The light is a Nice white /Blue.. And ready for this??? Its stuck to your head so you can use both hands!
As for snakes...Cary a stick and wack the ground in front of you as you walk.. If you come across one that is stubborn... Pop him! I see cotton mouth all the time.. Not an overly aggressive snake but still a viper and quite poisonous..

Yessup!

the tropuble wth stomping as you walk at night is that snakes are sluggish when it is cool and this may not be enough to rouse them. if they are in your path you may irritate them into striking [unlikely, but a possibility].

leather boots and even snakeboots are not [read not] foolproof but will make a penetrating strike extremely unlikely. imo, these are unnessesary; just make your footfalls deliberate and use a walking stick if you so choose.

Found Shrooms! The farmer then caught us picking at night and told us to put the shrooms back in the field or he would call the cops, good thing my lady fellow hunter found two and put them in her bra!

i've only seen a black rat snake in the field. a long black beauty with pretty beady eyes. they just watch you, then don't attack you. i'd be more afraid of pissing off a bull than walking by a snake....
