I've always thougth the new-style celicas were entirely too over-the-top.

Anyways, my recommendation is to drive a used car and let someone
else suck up the new-car price. Maybe you could find a nice RX/7 or
Porsche 944 and have a lot more class (in my eyes, anyway) than
driving a trendy new riceburner.

I wasn't going to be the one to tell him this, so I'm glad somebody else did.

Go for the celica. I'm a bit of a toyota freak, so I'm biased. The 1zz series engine is very reliable though. My car has the same 1zz-fe engine that the celica gt has, and in the three years since it left the lot, I've had to have it serviced once (for aftermarket cruise control issues, nothing powertrain related.) Not to mention your milage will be better than the 6.

My 2 cents.

My dad has a 2004 Mazda 6 Hatchback. He got it in the nice orange color, sadly with automatic. No manual was available at that time. Even though it's an automatic the autostick feature is nice and the car performs well. It has excellent pick-up with the good engine, though the mpg is in the lower 20's.

I personally have my dad's old 98 Neon RT 2-Dr. Performs great, and there's nothing like getting 32 mpg.
