At what stage is the psilocybin active?

Anyone know when the substrate contains enough psilocybin to be usable? Could you use the white stuff that forms in the jar rather than wait for the mushroom to grow?

As soon as you see mycelium you have psilocybin. I would wait for the jars, or whatever tech you are using, to completely colonize and then you can extract the psilocybin. just boil the mycelium for about 30 minutes in 3 cups of water and filter through a coffee filter. Drink the water and have fun. You will get a lot more psilocybin from the mushrooms if you just take the time to birth your cakes, and you can still boil the cakes and extract psilocybin even after the cake is exhausted.

You might want to do a heatless extraction in some cranberry juice if your going to walk that road. Heat has tendency to kill potency.

That's what I was going to say, wouldn't heat kill it. But I say just grow the shrooms out.

Anyway, people say that the cranberry tek is more potent if the cake has been exausted.

Heat does affect the potency of psilocybin, but at boiling temp it is not affected greatly. I find that I can only get about one dose out of each cake, but that dose is pretty stong, so i would not worry to much about the heat destroying the active ingredients.
