Also it's rather difficult to measure measureless things.  :psychsplit:

Sounds to me that Smallworlds has lost his train of thought and is so engulfed in what he's trying to say that he doesn't realize that we're not 'attacking' his idea.

Actually, it is a myth that people believed te world was flat until Columbus and others sailed around it. It was a myth created by the Americna author Washington Irving. Even the Greeks knew the Earth was round, and calculated within a close distance to how large the circumference was.

Logic told everyone the world was flat.

Well, no, logic helped us figure out it wasn't flat, assumptions told us it was flat.

Logic is the only thing that can tell you facts. If you just want feelings, you don't need to think about logic, but if try to get facts based on your emotions, you'll come to believe things that contradict a lot of logic, and contradict a lot of things that other people have come to believe using their emotions.

What really bothers me is that there are people out there who think that if you don't believe in things that you can't have proof in, that you're lacking in imagination, or that you're going to be morally bankrupt or something.

Well, I try my best not to believe in things that aren't logical, and I try hard to be a good person, and I think a lot of people would agree that I'm more creative than many people with firm, unverifiable beliefs.

Are people who believe in god or anything like that more likely to be happy than those who don't? Not from my observations. I know plenty of people who are firm skeptics but have wild passions and exciting happy lives.

A lot of people who grew up troubled used religion as a motivator to escape lives of crime or whatever, and these people are often really condescending, telling you how you're not really happy until you find god. No buddy, YOU weren't happy until you found god, not everyone is like you.

Do peopl who believe in psychokinesis get to use their abilities for anything really cool or useful? Not from what I've heard, the only people I've talked to who claim to have these skills are like "I kinda jiggled a thing". That doesn't sound that thrilling or useful to me.

Logic allows you to have an open mind. When you're stuck believing whatever your emotions deep to be correct, you could easily run into all kinds of biases. People get things wrong all the time. If you're sitting there thinking that all you need to verify something is to believe strongly enough, then you could get into all kinds of trouble. Believing things based on emotions instead of logic is why people believe that other people are evil, and why wars get started.

What's to gain from believing in stuff that is illogical, really?

What makes logic the ultimate authority on what is real, when logic itself is but a problem solving method, not an absolute source of truth?

It's the best source of truth we have out there.

Logic and reason has led to the development of medicine, philosophy, science, and technology. We'd be living in caves without it.
