(Fairly) Simple logic question
    #5325782 - 02/21/06 08:19 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I've got an argument of the form:

1. If P, then Q.
2. If P, then ~Q.
Conclusion:
3. ~P.

I know this is a valid argument, but I'll be damned if I know what logical rule of inference justifies it. I'm trying to figure this out for a paper on McTaggart's argument for the unreality of time, which follows this form.

Any help much appreciated.

~ is the negation symbol. ~P means "not P" or "P is not true".

Solved. Guess this form doesn't really have a name.
If a statement implies a contradiction, it is false.

(1) If P then Q.
(2) If P then not-Q.
(3) Not-P.

I think what you might be looking for is the "Principle of Exclusive Disjunction for Contradictories."
