I would prolly be considered a preppy or what not from a first impression, but that would be short lived. And boring... I consider myself to be boring at times. I'll explain... What I know and what I do is the norm and I'm constantly looking for something new to entertain me. When I'm not looking I'm bored. It really has nothing to do with anyone else. I feel that what makes me unboring is that I constantly try and search for things that I find interesting. I believe everyone does this and a boring person is someone who doesn't attempt to open their mind to the differences in this world. So those of you calling others boring because the clothes they wear, or the music they listen to... have simply found a way to stop searching for something to satisfy their own boring tastes and are infact more boring than the people they have labeled.

You're not receptive or open-minded at all in this situation. Your thinly veiled insults regarding my message prove that. Your "holier than thou" comment is especially funny considering you make an entire thread devoted to how you think you are better than other people.

The thread was about having a certain attitude towards culture that's outside your radar. It has nothing to do with being dismissive for valid reasons.

I wasn't criticizing anyone for things they liked to do, or culture they appreciated. I've said nothing about how certain bits of culture should be avoided. My point is its a common attitude, people all over the place have it.

It seems like you've gotten wildly offended by something that isn't even in the post, and now you're throwing personal insults at me, calling me childish, and claiming my friends must hate me. Real nice.

I went through the whole "everyone sucks but me" phase too. Then I got realisitic, grew up, and realized I needed to accept others if I wanted to better myself.

Yeah, you used to be just like me than you grew up

I've used that one before too.

In the very post you posted that in.

If you criticize other "culture's" or what they do or listen to. That is a culture or clique in its self. I have met tons of people that say what you say.

I'm not offended at all  You can call your friends boring but not take an opinion about yourself? I'm just saying your friends probably dislike the same things in you that you dislike in them.

It seems as if you are judging your friends and most of the culture for a 'boring' attitude that differs from yours (because you dislike/don't understand it) which is in actuality a common and dull attitude itself.

Considering your attitude not boring and somehow more interesting is IMO a farce with hints of elitism. I don't think you have much more to offer or enrich the world with an outlook that most of the culture is naive than a naive person.

Uh, no, I criticized them for sticking to only a certain range of culture. There's nothing wrong with appreciating mainstream music or television, it's when you only appreciate mainstream music or television that's the problem.

You're assuming things about my opinion that I didn't say at all.

I don't think most of the people have the attitude I'm describing. I'd say maybe 20% of people have it, and they tend to be older. More people have the attitude which you are criticizing me for having (because you completely misunderstood my post), which is where people deliberately seek out "weird" things and then shut out the mainstream.

However, my point is that both of these people are the same kind of twats, only some of them at least get some credit for trying to be interesting as opposed to trying to be dull.

I call the attitude "boring" because it is an attempt to make yourself less interesting. If you give something a try and don't like it, that's fine, I don't have anything bad to say about that.

My initial post was obviously misleading, as it brought out plenty of people from the latter catagory who thought this was the place to attack people whose behavior was "normal", and some people who got offended and attacked me.

Considering your attitude not boring and somehow more interesting is IMO a farce with hints of elitism.

I call the attitude I'm describing boring because it is an attempt to make yourself less interesting. The other attitude is an arrogant attempt to make yourself more interesting.

I found your first post in the thread, and I think it makes it quite clear that you didn't get what I meant whatsoever.

Learning to accept "boring" (more like "different than my picture of normal") people for their differences is much more important than seperating yourself from those people in how you look/act/think. You may learn or realize something you would not have before when you just avoided those dullards.

I'm not trying to separate myself from anyone in my appearance, actions, or general philosophy. I wouldn't consider my appearance or most of my actions to be attention getting or really fascinating in any way.

I'm talking about people who start watching movies with bizarre themes and turn them off because they fit outside of what they want to see. I have a friend who turned off "Dog Day Afternoon" at the point when they reveal he's robbing the bank to get money for his sex change operation.

I once told someone about my sister's mohawk, and they said "oh, so she's kind of fucked up then, is she?".

These people are my friends because I do accept them, and I respect plenty of things about them. I've just got issues with certain people's attitudes about keeping themselves fenced inside a certain cultural barrier.

This had nothing to do with attacking "preppies" or "normals" or any other high school style bullshit.

The only people I've ever met who I'd consider boring posers were people who were trying to hard to be interesting.

People who dismiss things that are too weird for them are not posers. They've got clear ideas about what they think is good, and if it doesn't look like that's what they're getting, then they don't like it. Has nothing to do with being a poser.

I've found that the people who try "to hard" are actually quite cool people... After they relax a bit they tend to quit trying so hard and they let their true colors show. It seems to be a defense mechanism created by the threat of being labeled. The very thing that happens to them, being labeled. A kind of "catch 22". When ya let it slide it usually disappears. Ofcourse their are exceptions - we all know.

If a person says something it's suspected as true. The same does not go for the clothes they wear. Clothing is very misleading as a means of deciphering character.

The buisness man may get up and go to his job carrying his suitcase. But whos to say he doesnt go to a phish show or smoke a bowl on a canoe trip?

Hes still a buisness man yes, but he is also a lot more.

We all wear a 1000 faces each day. We walk down the streat happy till we see something we dont like. We are then Angry. We keep walking then we see a hotty we are then lustfull.

It goes on on and on. We are never totally concious of this happening unless we look at it from an outside point of view.

Bullshit, put a jock next to a hippy and tell me which is which based on their clothes. 99 times out of a 100 you'll be right.

Redstorm doesn't have to be prep to wear prep clothes. His words and actions prove it.
If I have to dress up for work like a business man, it doesn't make me any less opinionated about drugs. It doesn't mean I won't do them.

I agree you probably could Identify a jock from appearance, but what does that tell you? That he's athletic? It doesn't tell you much more. It doesn't mean that he is boring and it reflects little of his personal life. Many assumptions can be made from appearance. These assumptions are nothing more than assumptions and reflect little of a persons character and ethics.

Can you look at one jock and two hippies and tell which is a NARC.  I hope you don't rely on your keen fashion sense to figure it out.  LOL

I don't think that's true. People dress according to who they idolize, and want to emulate, not only in appearance.

Someone who dresses like a gangster isn't necessarily a gangster, but are far more likely to be one than someone who doesn't dress like a gangster. Someone who wears sports related clothing likely has an interest in sports. Someone who wears a lot of band t-shirts likely goes to a lot of concerts and has an interest in music. Certain opinions and attitudes tend to follow different subcultures and people who follow these subcultures are far more likely to have these opinions and ideas. Obviously there are tons of exceptions as well.

I'm not saying that it can't give hints or clues to how or what this person is or does. These clues can be very misleading.

Simply put... I was refering to the old phrase... "don't judge a book by it's cover" It can give insight to what is contained with in but it shouldn't be the gauge by which the book is held.
