I wear brand name clothing, I get good grades in school, and would probably look to you guys to be a conformist or something like that.

Sorry, that was worded terribly.

If you guys who are ragging on people who aren't like you saw me walking down the street, you would probably label me as a conformist or a prep without even speaking to me. I like the clothes I wear. I don't wear them because they're on a commercial or a celebrity's body; I wear them b/c I like how they look on me.

I just feel it's shallow to judge someone on their looks or clothes (or musical tastes). People need to worry about their own faults before placing faults on others.

For example: I enjoyed the 2004 NE gathering, but I had one incident that was not enjoyable. Going into it, I was already nervous b/c I was somewhat new and didn't really know anyone. To add to this apprehension, someone decided to be a jerk and make a snide comment about me being a pretty boy or a preppy or something like that. That type of behavior is ridiculous.

A person should not be symbolized by his or her appearances, but by their actions and words. I was no different from this individual who decided to harass me (other than being a bit less ignorant than him) other than how I dressed and looked.

I'm just me. I don't try to conform to any standards or to be especially different just for the sake of it. I wear what I like, do what I like, listen to what I like and don't care what others think of it. And I try not to judge others until I get to know them also. First impressions can often be misleading.

Some people I've met who are the bleach-blonde, preppy, pop-music fans actually turn out to be pretty good people. And some people I've met who are the tattoed, pierced, drug-using, socially-unacceptable types are just shallow and fake and are trying too hard to be different because they think its cool.

Be yourself and you'll never be boring. Be something you are not just to impress people and it will be obvious.

What does being something your not mean? Maybe I am a good actor, but I can pretty much be anybody to anyone in certain social situations. When I talk to hippies I can adjust my humor to fit them and we have a good time. When I talk to shy girls I use subtle humor and less invasive actions to set them at ease to enjoy eachothers company. When I talk to out-going, soriority type of chicks, I am aggressive and cocky. Am I not being myself? I tend to get along with most people this way, and I have a fun time with everyone. I think "not being yourself" is a great way to be anyone you want, its like freedom, baby.

Sound to me like you are being exactly who you are. You are able to be comfortable in many situations with many different people, and make those people comfortable with you. Thats not fake, its just you. I am similar. I can be around all different kinds of people and situations and still be comfortable and fit in. Adjusting your actions to be comfortable with the surroundings is not disingenuous, it is just appropriate. I wouldn't act the same camping out with my Father (an extremely religious man) as I would at a Shroomery gathering, but I am still pretty much the same person in both situations. And I would bet that your personality remains pretty constant no matter where you are also.

yeah, I never have fit in anywhere. I am too weird for the straight-laced folk, and too clean-cut for the so-called "counter-culture" types. Oh, well - fuck their prejudice. Funny how the same people who hold the "I am so openminded" pretense are often very critical of the such things as fashion. At least the straight-laced folk are honest about their dick attitudes towards those who are different.

Learning to accept "boring" (more like "different than my picture of normal") people for their differences is much more important than seperating yourself from those people in how you look/act/think. You may learn or realize something you would not have before when you just avoided those dullards.

Bullshit. I don't avoid the dullards, I'm constantly surrounded by them. They're my best friends, the people I have no choice but to hang out with everyday.

Thanks for the holier-than-thou lesson though, I can already feel my soul being enriched.

I'm not going to pretend I love everyone just to try and satisfy your Disney fantasy about how the world should be.

Also, this thread had NOTHING to do with "preppies", on other high school cliques. This is about people who impose boringness upon themselves. It's quite possible to wear bland clothes and be an interesting person, I know tons of people like this.

Watching reality tv doesn't make you a boring person, but having clear cut definitions of what culture counts as interesting, and what is boring probably does. (ie. Jam bands, interesting, reality tv, boring).

I know quite a few people who try hard to be interesting, but come up boring. Like hippies who act like being sarcastic or even slightly negative means that you're somehow corrupt and should be avoided (yet spend most of their time complaining about modern society).

Pretty much anyone who thinks they are more enriched by avoiding certain aspects of culture.

("Oh, *I* don't own a TV, so I can't join into your little conversation about the Simpsons").

People who wait until something has been widely accepted as a classic, and have to be given an opinion by some kind of authority before giving something any kind of consideration.

("New movies are all bland and stupid... Citizen Kane, on the other hand, is a rich and masterfully told tale of...")

You're not receptive or open-minded at all in this situation. Your thinly veiled insults regarding my message prove that. Your "holier than thou" comment is especially funny considering you make an entire thread devoted to how you think you are better than other people.

I went through the whole "everyone sucks but me" phase too. Then I got realisitic, grew up, and realized I needed to accept others if I wanted to better myself.

I'd be interested to see how your "friends" feel about you. Chances are, if you are anything like your online persona, they find you pretentious, arrogant, and cynical.

Sorry to have bothered you with my personal experience :smirk:

BTW, you bore me.

Citizen Kane sucked.

"They're my best friends, the people I have no choice but to hang out with everyday."

Sounds like you're bored of being bored by the same boring people.
.....booooring Sidney boooooring.....

Also I find most jam bands pretty boring. As for the act of jamming itself, that's a different story. We had a big jam session in London this weekend at my friends house while throwing a keg party. I should've called you and trendal down.
