is there such thing as a blue meanie cubensis?
    #4445501 - 07/24/05 03:11 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

About a month ago, I ordered a set of spores that the seller called Blue meanie.  On the website (sporesdirect), he has these listed as a cubensis.  From what research i have done, the only blue meanies i have found were cyanasens, not cubensis.  Anyone have any input or experience with this type?

Yes there is a strain of cubensis out there that is called blue meanie. It is just a Cub. though.

is it more potent than most cubensis or about the same? I read that with the cyanescens, you only have to take half the dosage, but i feel that since it is still cubensis, its about the same.

There are two types of "Blue Meanies":

First are the Psilocybe Cyanescens, which their nickname is "Blue Meanies". These are the "real" Blue Meanies.

Second, there are the Psilocybe Cubensis variety of "Blue Meanies". These are a misnomer strain. The name for this strain was erroneously given to it by some spore vendor years back.

I hope that helped. Sometimes mushrooms can be confusing(in many ways).

almost...

Panaelous (Copelandia) cyanescens...are the "real" Blue Meanies. <--nickname.

Psilocybe cyanescens...are Wavy Caps. <--nickname.

The strain of Cubensis that is called Blue Meanies...is just Vendor hype!~
I believe it was the Keeper(shane) that caused this problem.
He loves to name Cubensis strains...to his liking.
It is my personal feeling that this strain of Cubensis should have never been named the "Blue Meanie"...and that any Vendor that carries this strain is doing an injustice selling it as such!~

my 2 cents worth!~

I really enjoyed Blue Meanies, very pretty looking, pale caps with lots of blue in them..I have no idea if yours will turn out the same, but its a nice cubie strain. You should take the same amount as any other cubie though. You need to order Pan Cyans if you want those..they are potent, more then 2x's cubies..

Yes,

Roadkill has the right answer.

As for the cubie strain. I as well as a lot of people did not like the initial results.

The issues were yield, fruit time, and inconsistent potency of the multispore innoculations regardless of growing method.

For most batches the potency was rarely an issue. Easily 2x more potent than other indoor cubie strains. Except upon the 5th or 6th flush assuming you got that far. It seemed to keep fruiting even though it drained the substrate.

The main issue was that it took an extra week to start fruiting compared to other strains. Which is still an issue.

In terms of taking a clone for headstash, nothing is better. That is the only reason I still work with the strain (cubie variety). If you are a beginner I wouldn't mess with it. Get something easy and reliable like South American or Orissa India, or a standard spore race that everyone likes.

Breeding it got rid of some of these early issues as well as exaggerated the potency.

I call my new strain Blue Indigo and havn't released it yet.

Prints taken from the clone also yield consistent results. Much work has been done since 2000 on it and it is almost ready for release. It is more of an item to play with and keep in your library.

It is a clone and I also have taken many prints.

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
And, no more silly names for the same old cubes please. There is no such thing as a cube 'strain' that is easily 2X more potent than others, especially grown from multispore inoculation. Please keep discussion of cube strains upstairs in the STRAIN THREAD. That's why it's there.
