Traveling Across America via Greyhound....
    #4380933 - 07/07/05 06:04 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

So today I was talking to this guy about how he got this rail pass from Amtrak which lets you travel anywhere in the US for 30 days, unlimited miles. I know I have probably thought of doing something like this before but now after talking with someone who has actually done it makes me want to do it even more now. Except I will probably take Greyhound. It is a little cheaper ($499) compared to Amtrak ($531) and Greyhound stops way more places. And the guy said buses are faster. But trains are more comfortable.

So, has anyone done this? This will be so awesome. I have only been through a handful of states and have always wanted to see the entire US, including New York, which is only real to me on TV (it doesn't really exist, does it?) I would like to go along with someone like a friend but maybe alone is the best way to go?

I know people in different parts of the country so I would definitely try and stay with them to save money. Of course I would spend the day with them while they take me to some cool places in their city. Or I might camp somewhere.... Hopefully some fellow shroomerites could be my host? That would be unreal, seeing as I've never met anyone on here. This is too good to be true. I can't believe I have never done this before....

Here is the info on the tickets: Greyhound Discovery Pass

cramped, smelly, crying babies, poopy babies, various white trash arguing the whole way... those were the highlights of the trip

very hard to sleep in a greyhound bus because of the seat's neck area. greyhound also makes too many stops. you might be doing more stopping and waiting at terminals than being on the road and exploring. i would pick some cities and hop on a train.

happy trails.

not... after about 6 hours your ass goes numb, and the smell o the bus gets worse... it's way over crouded, you dont ever really sleep cause when you fionaly fall asleep, they make you get off the bus at 2am for an hour to clean it... yea, they stop at more places... shitty places.... after about a day of it, you really understand how shitty it is... it is the cheapest way to travel, so the poorer people take it... i've never riden on a train, but i could imagine how much better it is... and it's only 32$ more... i mean that's cheap for luxury, different cars to go into, maybe a choice bathroom.... somethin...

oh, but if you do go greyhound, run to the bathroom and stock up on wet-naps asap... those dissapear like a fart in the wind...

buses might be faster for shorter distances, but I would
have thought trains would have the edge on long distance
travel...

chicago to seatle, for example.

yeah i took a greyhound once and almost had to layover a few times in terminals due to random shit like being late or the driver getting lost. i've never been on the amtrak so i couldn't say whether or not they're nice but the greyhound isn't very comfortable. i slept off & on.. but it sucked mostly. a lot of the terminals are ghetto as fuck too.

Yeah, Greyhounds are kinda like that. Pretty much everything everyone has said so far is accurate. I took a trip from NYC to LA via bus and it was the worst trip I've ever taken. It was essentially a week without sleep. You do HAVE to get off the bus at certain times, and there are some terminals that I honestly wouldn't feel safe sleeping at. The train sounds like the way to do it.

I once took the greyhound from houston to austin, supposed to be a three hour ride. Halfway there the bus driver pulled over to the side of the highway and went and took a 10 minute shit. If your going to ride greyhound, sit as far as possible from the crapper.

greyhound is awesome! if u can get a seat with nobody next to u, you can sleep laying on ur side curld up (if u are shorter than 6ft its no problem). and u can get used to sleeping there, bring a extra shirt so u can make a nice little pillow to keep ur head from falling right or left, that way u can keep ur neck straight while sleeping (the shirt doesnt go behind ur head cuz that wouldnt be good, u just jam it between the side of ur head and it sits on the seat so its like a wall to keep ur head in one spot). you prob wont get more than 6 hours sleeping if ur lucky, and the seats arent that bad. ive been cross country 3 times nonstop and another 2 probably combined. check out canada, the road is straight and cool. especially BC is awesome, try to drive thru in the day, awesome mountain. and its nice cuz there is good beer for cheap and im only 19. drinking on greyhound = awesome. weed too. ive met plenty of awesome ppl on greyhound, probably poor but really who gives a shit. geoge bush has millions of dimes but hes still an asshole. if ur scared of ppl cuz they r homeless and broke then u are missing out. u should open ur eyes. ever head dont judge a book by its cover. better yet, "judge not lest ye be judged" viva la greyhound!
note" greyhound is goin out of business, lots of stops in little towns are gonna be stopped
