SDSU Student Accused Of Making Meth In Campus Lab June 15, 2005 - 10news.com (edited 6/16/05 to the most recent story which, among other things, corrects the 'Phetanol' error)
Student In Jail After 8-Month Undercover Investigation
SAN DIEGO -- A chemistry graduate student allegedly used a research lab at San Diego State University to manufacture methamphetamine, Ecstasy and an anesthetic 80 times more potent than morphine, authorities said.
Matthew Finley, 26, was arrested at his home in Ocean Beach on Wednesday on drug charges and the Chemical Sciences Laboratory was shut down as investigators removed the drugs, said Misha Piastro, spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration.
"He felt he could get away with it. To his disappointment today, he did not," Piastro said. "His disregard for the safety of the rest of the student body is alarming and not something we take lightly."
Finley told investigators that he manufactured methamphetamine and a chemical used to make methamphetamine, as well as Ecstasy and an anesthetic called fentanyl in the university lab, according a court document. Capsules of Ecstasy, vials of fentanyl and three marijuana plants were seized from his home, authorities said.
Finley, who was pursuing a master's degree in chemistry, was convicted of drug charges in Santa Barbara in 2002 and placed on probation, according to a complaint filed with a San Diego federal judge Wednesday.
At that time, Finley told investigators he used a lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara to convert a liquid form of the drug Ecstasy into a powder, according to the complaint.
Finley was caught growing marijuana the following year and again placed on probation. A judge sentenced him to two years in prison but suspended the sentence.
University police approached the DEA late last year after being tipped that someone was manufacturing methamphetamine in the lab. A surveillance camera captured Finley late last month working with a dark liquid that later tested positive for Ecstasy, authorities said.
The lab was expected to reopen Thursday.

phetanol, which is an extremely volatile narcotic
WTF is a volatile narcotic?
Do these guys just make this stuff up on the fly or do they have a guide book of made up stuff to read from?

The article has been updated. I suppose they were talking about Fentanyl, not Phetanol.

Student Pleads Not Guilty To 'Cooking' Drugs On Campus June 21, 2005 - nbcsandiego.com
Man Faces 15 Years In Prison If Convicted
SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego State University graduate student accused of making illegal drugs on campus in a classroom laboratory was in court Tuesday to enter a plea.
Matthew Finley, 26, entered a not-guilty plea at his arraignment in front of a U.S. district court judge.
The United States Drug Enforcement Agency is accusing Finley, who was arrested at his Ocean Beach home last Wednesday, of manufacturing methamphetamine, ecstasy and a strong anesthetic called Fentanyl in the campus lab.
While officials said Finley was not making large amounts of the drugs, the situation was dangerous for students and staff because the chemicals Finley was using were extremely volatile.
"This showed a wanton disregard for safety," said John Fernandes, of the DEA. "To not only produce something that is volatile, but to be in a position to go ahead and give it to other people. It's disheartening."
Finley, who faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted, is due back in court on July 5.

SDSU grad student ordered held without bail July 5, 2005 - signonsandiego.com
SAN DIEGO - A graduate student accused of making drugs at a laboratory on the San Diego State University campus pleaded innocent today to four federal charges.
Matthew Havis Finley, 27, was ordered held without bail by Magistrate Judge Nita Stormes.
Finley faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted of four counts of manufacturing a controlled substance, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Ko.
Finley is due back in court on Aug. 5 for a motions hearing before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller.
Federal agents arrested Finley last month at his home, and the campus lab where he worked was shut down as investigators removed methamphetamine, Ecstasy and a strong anesthetic called fentanyl, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
A search of Finley's Ocean Beach home turned up methamphetamine, fentanyl, Ecstasy pills and several marijuana plants, DEA officials said.
Finley, who is pursuing a master's degree in chemistry at SDSU, was on probation for a 2002 drug charge in Santa Barbara, DEA officials said.
Authorities said he used a laboratory at UC Santa Barbara to convert a liquid form of Ecstasy into a powder. He was caught growing marijuana the following year and placed on probation again, DEA officials said.
