Student charged with selling psychedelic mushrooms

BENNINGTON -- A Pleasant Street resident was arraigned Friday on charges of selling psychedelic mushrooms.
William J. Blakely, 18, pleaded not guilty at Vermont District Court to delivery of a hallucinogenic drug, a felony, and possession of a hallucinogenic drug, a misdemeanor.

Blakely is a student at Southern Vermont College, according to court officials.

The felony carries up to a three-year jail term and the possession charge is a one-year offense. Blakely was released on conditions after the arraignment, according to court records.

Police accuse Blakely of selling 1/8 ounce of mushrooms for $40 to an informant. The deal happened at 7:30 p.m. on April 4 at Blakely's apartment at 326 Pleasant St., according to an affidavit by an officer with the Bennington Police Department.

Police field-tested the mushrooms, which caused a chemical agent to turn bluish-purple, indicating they were hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to the affidavit.

Blakely has no prior convictions, but does have a pending charge against him of furnishing alcohol to a minor.

The alcohol charge stems from an incident on March 14 in which police say they responded to a complaint of loud music coming from Blakely's apartment, according to court records.

An officer with the Bennington Police Department approached the apartment, and a girl answered the door, according to the officer's affidavit.

"There was a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the apartment, along with a moderate odor of burnt marijuana," the officer wrote.

Blakely admitted to the officer that he and a roommate had returned from rugby practice that day and that the two had invited some friends over for a party, against the wishes of a third roommate, who had nothing to do with the party, according to the affidav

that's a rip-off

One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because growers in the 30s lobbied against hemp farmers -- they saw it as competition, because It is not chemically addictive as is nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine.
