disappointing new shpongle album
    #4351134 - 06/29/05 03:09 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

I'm listening to it right now and besides that the production quality is very good I can't say anything good about it. Halfway through the album and there wasn't even 1 track that really caught my attention. One of the things this album doesn't have are good the melodies that the first two albums have. It sounds flat and uninspired  :frown:

Sure it does sound weird, but it isn't really interesting

I'm hoping a sizeable dose of shrooms will help me see the good in it. I want to like it so badly.

I'm sure it sounds good when tripping, but good music sounds good when sober too...

I hope you both like it though. I stopped the cd after number 15 because I was bored. Now listening to Ozric Tentacles - Erpland. An amazing album! I can really recomend it

I think it's an awesome album.. very upbeat and energizing throughout, for now, it is probably my favorite of all three.  A step in a different direction it may be, but I guess in a sense it is more or less the result from which their sound has evolved, and the music is still as brilliant if not more so than it was in the beginning imho..

Perhaps once you hear it a few times it will start to grow on you.. I haven't tripped to it yet but I definitely can't wait to

I haven't listened to it yet. But I know from previous Shpongle albums that you must really listen to the songs a few times to start appreciating the subtleties and melodies of them.

i was disappointed as well.

i suppose the source of my disappointment is that "are you shpongled" was very slow and drifty most of the time. made for very good atmpospheric music, if you get my drift.

this one, it seems it would more likely appeal to a dance crowd. not suprising, since trance music originated from the dance scene, but it's not my cup of tea.

it's just, too much of same tempo and beats. "are you shpongled" carefully drew a scenery while drifting from one song to the next. this one seems like it's just one big rave, almost. i'll just have to listen to it more to like it i guess. i do want to like it, since it cost me almost twice as much as a usual record would cost me.

actually it seems like something is lost :smirk:
and that's overall good songs. these ones just seem just kinda emotionless or something

I'll give it another try sometime soon though. I'm not giving up yet

It's no Shpongle 1, and it's no Shpongle 2, but that's because it's Shpongle 3! I notice as the albums progress they get more and more focused on world music, and I can really enjoy that, nothing like a real natural instrument twisted around electronically by Posford. I love the part with the spanish guitar, and the trumpet from "Stamen of the Shaman".

Maybe it lacks emotion, or maybe it's you that lacks the emotion from it because you haven't had any amazing experiences with the album. When you're with something from the start the new stuff will never seem as good as the old stuff. Shpongle 3 sounds great to me, it seems to have a lot of potential, I can't wait to trip to it and make it even better!

I know it's not 1 or 2. But they have progressed allright, but not in a good direction imo.

no. music plays with human emotions so just listening should be the amazing experiance by itself!

I liked the guitar parts too btw, that's the best on the album
but like I said I'll give it another try.

i kinda lost my interest to shpongle after they went so mainstream.
haven't listen to new one yet?
love their music anyway.

Listened to the new one last night while candyflipping, and it was goddamn amazing.

Hahahaha, mainstream?  Walk up to joe six-pack on the street and ask him if he's heard Shpongle.

And Stefan, couldn't agree with you more, I listened to it on a car trip up to this small festival we played at, and it was the first time I listened to it the whole way through, it is very very dissapointing.  The only track that stands out is the first 3, which was Beija Flor.

And where the hell is Raja on this album? He's on about 2-3 songs and thats it.  Are You Shpongled is BY FAR, their best album.

And Ozric Tentacles are the best band ever!!

I've only listened to it once through. Where are the awesome time changes? It seems to have almost the same time signature all the way through. Other than that, its really good.

But for me, Shpongle = creative time changes (a la Divine Moments of Truth)... and Nothing Lasts just doesn't have enough of that for my taste.
