Oxygen sensor

It's like 3 inches long, and overall it's gonna cost me 300 bucks. What a crock of shit. Mechanics make too much money.

how much o2 is in the fuel-air mixture. It needs to be fixed because a.) I can't pass emissions without it and b.) it affects the performance of my car and c.) my gas mileage.

But 300 bucks..honestly.

Put it in yourself.

If its that hard to install it, maybe 300 bucks isnt that expensive.

On my car, it took about 7 minutes to change the upper manifold sensor.

Just get a Chilton's manual for your car and get the part yourself. It couldn't be that hard to install yourself. Plus, you'll have the manual for future reference...

that probably includes labor (I hope), which is the real killer when it comes to fixing cars.

It does include labor. But I didn't KNOW it was the oxygen sensor. They found that out. I don't know shit about cars or how to diagnose/fix them. How am I supposed to find out it's the oxygen sensor?

On a newer Plymouth, for example, if you turn the ignition key on/off 3 times, the check oil light will blink in a series of patterns...1-3, 2-5...whatever...look that code up {I think Chilton's manual has it} and it tells you what's wrong....the only problem is, if it shows more than one sensor needed, and you don't, in fact, need it, you can't return a sensor for a refund.... {mechanics can} ToiletDuk is right...get a Chilton's manual if you're going to keep the car for a while. I'm lucky...my daughters' boyfriend is an ace VW mechanic... = free Jetta doctor...

Similar to what vinsue said...

I assume your check engine light came on? Local auto parts stores will run your codes for free and tell you what is wrong. My check engine light came on, I had the code checked at "Auto Zone", bought the part and replaced it all in under an hour.

When I have to take my car to a shop... I never have the same place diagnose and repair, and I call many shops to get the lowest cost for repair.

My dad took his car to the local Toyota dealer because of a flashing light on the dash and they plugged their computers in and said it was the oxygen sensor that had gone and that the manifold needed replacing too.

They wanted close to $600 just to replace the oxygen sensor!

So I called this guy I kind of know and it wasn't the oxygen sensor or the manifold.

He just taped up a hole in the exhaust and re-booted the on board computer and it was sorted!

I'd seek a second opinion if I were you.

Well it's too late now. I really have no idea how to deal with car people or mechanics or any of that shit. I can't deal with salesmen. But I'd say it's time to learn.
